possibly bad control board

There are several things that can cause this. Dont assume it is the panel. The panel was about 150 dollars if you can find one but it could be the motor control board or any one of a number of interlock switches and without a volt meter and some advanced knowledge it may be a challenge for you to repair.

The lid switch is a safety feature and should not be bypassed.

If the washer was stopped before the cycle was complete, the controls lock up.

The console does not get removed. Remove the obvious attaching screws and swing the console up for access.
