Have look in the router settings for the actual internet connection speeds, as these are a more true reading than the speed check as the speeds can vary at different times of the day and 2 or 3 speed checks can bring different results. your actual connection speed that is showing in the routers settings is the connection you are getting from your ISP. If you are with BT they usually recommend using their latest routers, why i'm not sure, as the only thing i have noted is that the MTU is set at 1500 (Maximum Transmition Units)and in other routers the MTU is automatically set at 1493, so look for the MTU setting and up it if necassary, but not above 1500, also double check all the settings, even put the bt router back in and see if speeds improve, if, you know the BT router is set up purposly for faster connection speeds. Also try checking your speed at a speed test site at a quieter time of day, you will also see different speed check sites give you different speed results.

SOURCE: netgear DG834G v3 Installation

connect the yellow (or blue?) ethernet cable to your computer, this should connect to the router (router should be ON)

Now, in internet explorer type 192.168.0.1 (this should be the defualt gateway for the router on default settings.

Now you're into the router, there should be a setup wizard button in there.

See if you can set it up using that

SOURCE: want to return O2 Router and use netgear Router

Here are some troubleshooting steps that I suggest you try:

1. Check physical connections.

a. Connect the modem to the Internet port of the router. The Internet “i” LED on the front of the router should light up.
b. Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports (i.e port 1, 2, 3 or 4) on the back of the router. The corresponding port light where you connected the computer should be lit up.

2. Access the router's web-based utility.

a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. By default, the user name is "admin" and the password is "password".

Note: If you were unable to access the router's web-based utility, you may reset the router to restore the settings to factory default.

To reset the router:

a. Please push the reset button at the back of the router and release after 30 seconds.
b. Unplug the power adapter for 10 seconds and then plug it back in.

3. Configure the router.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a cable connection, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings under Setup tab.
b. Select No for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Scroll down on the center page and look for the Router MAC Address section. Set it to Use computer MAC address and click on the Apply button.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a DSL connection, please follow the steps below:

a. Click on Basic Settings.
b. Select Yes for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
c. Select Other on the Internet Service Provider drop down box.
d. Enter your ISP's username (username@ISPdomain) and password. Then, click on Apply.

4. Configure the wireless settings.

a. Click on the Wireless Settings under Setup.
b. Change the SSID to any unique name.
c. Scroll down, look for the Security Options settings and select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy).
d. Set the Authentication type to "Automatic" and the Encryption Strength to "64bit".
e. Leave the Passphrase field blank, select Key 1 and enter a 10-digit number.

Note: The 10-digit number you typed in the key 1 will be the password or network key for the wireless connection.

f. Click Apply button to save the changes.
g. Go to Router Status under Maintenance tab and check if there is an IP address under Internet port. If it's 0.0.0.0, do a power cycle.

5. Power cycle.

a. Power off the modem, router and computers.
b. Turn on the power of the modem first and wait for it to initialize, the lights to stop blinking.
c. Power back the router and the computers. Check if it will be able to get online.

If you have wireless computers, you can connect them wireless to the router. Kindly follow the instructions below:

Netgear WGT624 V3 Wireless Router Problems by BigG2 - January 16, 2007 1:17 AM PST

Hi Guys/Gals,

My wireless connection is not working and i cannot log on to it, I have connected a Netgear WGT624 V3 Wireless Router to my Motorola SurfBoard SB5101E Modem which is connected to Telewest Cable Broadband (internet works fine if i access directly through the modem), on the router the power light is lit and also the internet light flashes rapidly but the wireless light comes on for a couple of
seconds and then goes out - i think this is the problem? I have tried logging on to the router to check the wireless settings but cannot access it, i have also tried connecting directly via LAN but cannot get this to work either although i am not sure if i have connected it correctly?

Any ideas/comments/advice is very much appreciated!!

Thanks in advance,

Can't get internet access through NetGear DG834G Router

You have to configure your router...

If your ISP provided you with IP Address, enter the assigned IP address, subnet mask, gateway IP address anbd DNS IP address for your broadband router.

If you connect to the Internet using an xDSL Modem and your ISP has provided you with a Password and a Service Name, then your ISP uses PPPoE to establish a connection. You must enter the required information.

Hope this could help..

Mon =)
