20 Most Recent NetGear DG834G Router Questions & Answers

After fighting with this for the last couple of hours I have my ipod touch working with the netgear DG834G(v3) router. The fix is a bit odd and I am not entirely sure why it works but I thought I would share and hopefully it might help you out …

First I think that the WEP encryption simply does not work between these two devices and causes some very strange behaviour – the WEP 'authentication type' setting I had on the 'wireless settings' page was set to 'shared key' – I flicked this to 'automatic' & strength to ‘128 bit’ - hit apply and finally I found I was able to connect without an error message (after inputting the correct WEP key). Unfortunately the DHCP did not work correctly after this and I kept receiving IP addresses in the range of 169.254.x.x (an internal default) rather than my networks expected 192.168.0.x range. The Ipod touch couldn’t find any DNS servers or connect to the internet.

To get round this I set the router ‘security options’ to use WPA instead (WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)) instead of WEP. Set the new WPA password at the bottom of the wireless settings page - again hit apply - and configured the ipod to use the new password and WPA PSK instead of WEP. This worked fine – although it does mean I have to change the settings on all my other wireless devices around the house!

The weird thing is that although the router isn’t using WEP encryption changing the 'authentication type' setting back to ‘shared key’ in the WEP menu breaks the WPA connection again – very odd? I blame netgear and their obviously crazy wep code :)

The router username is always admin
The default password is password or (for older routers) 1234
Try the default username and password before resetting the router to the factory defaults.
When a router resets, it goes back to the state when it was new — all information that was entered by hand is lost! Examples are critical things you need to get online, such as ISP username, ISP password, IP addresses, security keys, and ports and services that were opened. It all needs to be re-entered.

So, have your ISP information before resetting the router.
Naturally, if you moved to a new city, or if you bought a used router, the old information in the router may not be of use to you. Contact your ISP if you can't connect any computer directly to the Internet. Then, if there is a connection problem when the router is added, see No Internet Access Through the Router

Reset for most routers with a reset button on the rear panel
Write down configuration information such as IP addresses, security keys, opened ports and services, etc., that you modified. (The default username is admin and the password is either password or 1234. Try these before resetting the router.)

Press the reset button on the back until the test light blinks.
This takes about 10 seconds.
(To avoid accidental resets, the small button is recessed. Use a pen or paperclip to access it.)
Release the button.
Wait for the router to reboot.
Log in with the default password.
If the router was not cleared, try these additional steps AFTER the router has finished rebooting.

Unplug the router's power.
Press and hold the reset button.
While the button is held down, reconnect router's power.
Continue to hold the reset button for 20 seconds after reconnecting the power.
Wait for the router to reboot.
Log in with the default password

to access the router you will need to open up your web browser and type in,it will then ask you for a user name and password ,the user name is admin, the password is password, that will get into the netgear utility for the router, that info can also be found on the bottom of router,if that doesnt work then you will have to reset the router to the default settings by holding in the reset button for about ten seconds located on the back ,you will have to use something that is small enough to depress it,you have to reset it while it is on,if you got it used then you should reset it anyway so that you can configure it according to your situation,ok have fun and good luck, you can get detailed info from netgears website.

Usually there will be a small button on the side of your router that you will need to use a pin to reset. Once you do this you will be able to reset the router to factory default settings. I also have provided a link below should you need further help with this.

If you have changed the default password, you need to reset the router to the factory settings to get in with the default user and password (user admin and password as password, or if that doesn't work try 1234 - these are the default password for NetGear routers). Note that you will lose the ISP settings and wireless settings when you reset the router.

Here's a video on how to reset the router to the factory default settings: http://kbserver.netgear.com/media/flash/training/Troubleshooting/NG_WGR614V9Router_TS_LostPassword.html

Well it seems that you have uploaded the firmware on the router using wireless connection. The firmware on the router has corrupted and now does not seem to be recoverable.

Dude if it is under warranty then get it replaced. To log a complaint with NETGEAR go to this site:

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.

You can reset your Netgear router/wireless DG834G router to the factory settings from within the router manager. The reset procedure removes all user-configured settings and returns the router to the original factory settings. For this reason, only reset the router if you encounter problems that can't be solved with other methods.Step 1: Check that your Netgear router/wireless DG834G router is properly connected with your system or not. If it is OK, then press reset button on Netgear router for at least 10 seconds. The 'test' light should flash during this process.Step 2: Now open browser and enter Netgear's IP address into the address bar. Generally, '' is the Netgear router IP address but you can find specific IP address in Netgear router manual.Step 3: Now enter your default username and password to log in to router.Step 4: Click 'Erase' button under the 'Revert to Factory Default Settings'. This process will erase all your previous changes that have been made to the router and restore the configuration settings to factory setting. Don't interrupt the process until the process is finished.Once the router's 'test' light has stopped blinking and the configuration page you are on has refreshed, the router has been reset. Hello..the quick answer is yes, this router allows wired and wireless connections at the same time, and it is easy to connect wirelessly (in theory...).

The PS3 will need to be configured to connect to your router, though. There is a guide to achieving this here:

If the wireless signal on the router has been secured, the settings used will be needed to set up the PS3.

If not, you may wish to secure the wireless connection, which is not too difficult - just a few steps, which I or someone else can help with if you wish.

Hope this helps, but please come back to Fixya if anything is not clear or you need further information.

Netgears products are terrible with non support what so ever. I'm sure you had change your router already, but if your ISP could provide you with a different brand, the problem will disappear.

Do not fully understand your question. On reading the instruction manual you can schedule the firewall to block traffic at certain times in section 5-15 of http://kbserver.netgear.com/pdf/dg834_g_b_manual_v2.pdf This may be what you are looking at doing . ????

download driver and software from the following link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategor%E2%80%8By?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3940574 In order to achieve wireless capabilities you need to temporarily connect a USB cord into the computer and printer to find your wireless network through the HP software. If you have a Windows computer and the Solution Center is already installed on your computer, then follow these steps: 1. Go into Devices and printer 2. Right click on the printer, select remove device 3. Click on your Start Menu, then All Programs 4. Click on the HP folder 5. Click on your printer, then printer set up and software 6. Click on add a new printer, click on wireless (This is where you can temporarily connect your USB cord)

The ADSL installation details have changed, so you need to update the router. Check the router has not been moved too far from the laptop.

If you lost your password you will need to reset into factory settings. There will be a pin hole near power wire use a tooth pick or paper clip or something of thAt size and push in and hold for 30 seconds. You will have to reset all settings. Or if you never set the password try admin as user name and password as password. That is usually the factory set info

I am sure you have tried this, but if not give it a go:- Switch off both powerplugs and leave for 5 minutes.. Switch on the powerplug nearest the router without the LAN cable installed. Wait for 2 minutes and switch on the other powerplug without the LAN cable being attached. Now wait for another 2 minutes before plugging in the LAN cable Now plug in the LAN cable at the router end. After about 2 minutes, plug in the LAN cable at the remote end. Good luck.
