The printer reads the printhead as a cartridge too and the error is referring to the printheadthat's faulty and needs replacement!It is an expensive part but can be replaced!Contact your local canon dealer and ask them for a quote on the printhead!
I had the same problem on my pixma mp780. I cleaned the printer head. it worked for about a year, but then i had to replace the printer head. after you clean or replace it reboot it.
Try to reset to factory .
Remove ink cartridges and print head.
Power off machine and unplug for 10-15 minutes.
Restart machine and install head and cartridges.
If it is new, just call technical support. Chances are if it is in warranty, you'll get it replaced. I'd say do that before anything. Let me know otherwise
