My husband heated up something in the microwave and when he took his food out he bumped the latch and broke it and then shut the door. Now we can't even get it open. How do I open the door so I can see if I can fix it?

Bad luck. Are you sure you mounted everything everythinh exactly the way it was? No pieces missing or left over?
Best procedure is to that a photo of each step.

Sometimes the switch in the door latch sticks. Mine did that and I ust closed the door with just a slight more force and everything started working fine.

I have an Emerson MW8999RD that all of a sudden yesterday wouldn't latch. I don't think you have to, but I took the door off (three screws hold the case on which needs to be removed to get at the top hinge). Then I took off the inner plastic picture frame - pretty easy with a thin blade to move the fragile tabs. Then I removed the metal frame that has the little microwave blocking holes. This was the hardest part because the plastic retaining tabs are even more fragile and I broke one. Then I found the loose spring due to broken plastic hook as described above. I was able to make a new hook by simply looping a small zip tie where the old plastic hook tip broke off. Now works great!

Most likely there is a part missing from the door latch mechanism that you need. This probably broke off when the handle failed. It would be a tab or wedge shaped piece of plastic that strikes the door switch and pushes the switch closed when the door is completely shut. You will need to find that piece and glue it back on or get a new handle assembly from Samsung.

spring mount was broken and took advice of above post...tied a zap strap to one of the holes in the frame and then attached spring to zap strap! works like a charm!

Hi, quite often this is due to a bad door switch located inside behind the area where the door hooks go into the oven.
Opening the door while cooking (without first hitting the STOP pad) is the primary cause of door switch failure.
In some cases, the problem is a bad connection or a bad relay on the control board. That's something we see from time to time, and we repair those nationwide for $32.50, but it's usually a door switch.


It can be fixed......

Remove the cover --- you shuld be able to release the lock from withinthe cabinet.

While you are there, you may want to replace the door safety interlock switch(s)

You may have to disassemble the door to get the latch fixed.

I can tell you what we did when we had that issue with our Maytag microwave. The door wouldn’t latch correctly and an appliance repairman said we would have to get a new microwave. My husband took the spring out and decided to just put the spring back. It had come unhooked somehow. He put it back and it’s worked fine going on 3 years later.

You need to replace the whole door latch with an original part.

If it is working but not heating, then test the high voltage capacitor,the rectifier diode.or the magnetron. If all this are fine, test the control board.If turntable is not running check also the door switch.

Remember that microwaves are potentially dangerous devices if not repaired properly, the job must be done by a competent person.
A microwave energy leakage test must always be performed when the oven is serviced for any reason.
