Since you can print, its confirmed that you have installed the printer driver.
If you have not installed the Canon scanner driver then
Please click on the following link and confirm if you have installed the Scanner driver

Select the Operating System (OS - Windows ) you have.
post which you should be able to use the scanner.

I read somewhere that the printer/scanner must be plugged directly into the computer in order to scan. I tried it, and it works. Printing can be done wirelessly, but apparently not scanning!

I had the same problem. After replacing the USB cable with a good one the scanner came back to life.
I suspect scanner has a higher requirement for USB data transmission thats why printing and copying work but scanning does not.

The serial number is located inside the maching, behind the tape attached to the cartridge carrier. When the cartridges are all the way to the left side (position for changing cartridges), the serial number is visible at the center-right position. Open the maching as if you were going to change cartridges.
