Does water supply need to be shut off to change water filter on model 106 side-by-side fridge?

please double check that your freezer door is closing properly. You can also pull the fridge out and check whether the water is coming from the back of the of the fridge. If not, then that means there's a leak under the fridge and if that's the case you'll need to schedule a diagnostic on the fridge. You might reach out to Kenmore over the phone directly to ask them to send you a technician for this.

Most likely for this model the water filter is at the base grille of the fridge. It is a Twist on / Twist off.

There is an O ring that will leak water into the overflow pan under the fridge. I'd clean the pan too to eliminate bad odors. You must shut off the water supply before changing the filter element. There is no shut off valve built into the filter or its housing.

Check / replace the filter. Many fridges have a filter readily accessible from the fresh food compartment. The filter should be changed at regular intervals for best performance. A filter that is never changed will reduce and eventually stop water flow through it.

Check the temperature of the fresh food compartment near the filter. It may be "flirting" with the 32 degree mark. If it is this low, water has turned to ice - and will stop water from flowing. Bump the temperature up a tad to see if it solves the problem.

Lastly, the water supply solenoid may have failed. You didn't provide the model fridge - so I can't give specific info about it - but many fridges have one or two solenoids at the rear of the fridge for water supply and ice makers. You should hear a clicking sound from the rear of the fridge on many models when dispensing water or when the ice maker cycles on. If one has failed, you may expect to pay about $15 to $50 for a replacement - depending model.

Solenoid valve replacement is pretty straight forward. Usually all the is needed are some simple hand tools and a rag to pick up spilled water. Make sure the water supply is shut off and unplug the fridge before attempting.

NOTE: If the fridge has a filter button, press and hold it for 5-10 seconds.

Changing the water filter should not cause the water and ice in door to not work. The actual freezer door switch will cause this problem. When the door is open ice and water in door are disabled. The door switch is a 3 contact switch. One contact is common, one turns the light on / off and one disables / enables ice and water in door. Manually depressing the door switch in the door fold hinge area should enable the water in door function. Do NOT test the ice function. If after you depress the light / door switch the light does not go out and the water in door does not work then the door switch has failed. The door switch is released from the cabinet by sliding either a putty knife or a knife blade along one side to unlock the locking tab. If the switch only has 2 terminals you have removed the wrong door switch. Check the other door.

If your refrigerator has the wiring harness on the bottom of the door hinge there is the possibility that during the water filter change the connection of the door wiring connectors was loosened or broken. Just check to make sure that there is not a harness on the bottom of the door hinge. If there is a harness on the bottom of the door hinge make sure the connectors are connected.

no you do not need to shut off the water supply

Hi .. first I would try and eliminate the filter as the problem. Remove the filter and try the water again. If the water flows strong, then the filter is the problem. If the water stills sputters and is low flow, then there is a partial blockage in the internal tubing , or a problem with the supply. If you roll the fridge out to get at the suppl. you could shut it off and disconnect the supply tube from the fridge, then turn the water on slowly to check the flow at the supply. If the flow is good there , then the blockage is internal.

yes you can they are spendy the shelf is a 2 part. the glass which is like 70.00 or better. and you have the shelf frame. that is priced around 50.00 plus shipping. hope this helps. There are several parts warehouses where you can purchase them. glass shelf part number is 2177986 and the frame is 2163572. this is for the fridge side.

It might be that you have a restriction at the water supply line serving the fridge. Check it for good flow (have bucket and towels handy!) If supply line is good, then move onto the fridge to check the water inlet valve(s). as newer models have 2 or 3 inlet valves, a main water valve for the entire unit, and possibly one each for the ice maker and water dispenser past the main inlet valve (solinoid).

You can check these by simply shutting off the main supply to the fridge from the house water line 1st, and then removing each water line from the supply side of the fridge and seeing if you have water flow from the house to the valve side. If you do, then reconnect the lines to the fridge valves and see if you can get water flowing to the other side of the solinoid/valve when you have someone try to get a glass of water from the water dispenser, etc.

It is possible that there is an obstruction in the lines, by not very likely. Normally it is a failed water valve(s) (solinoid) that causes low flow or complete loss of flow, especially if you've changed the fridge water filter or replaced it with the "cap" which eliminates filtering of the water.

It is that you'll likely have to replace at least one, maybe more, of the fridge inlet water valves. If you have the time, try to zero in on the failed one by bypassing each, one at a time, until you get water flow. That way, you'll only have to purchase just the replacement valve needed to get things working again.
