Disconnect the power cable from the drive and boot the PC. shut it down, reconnect the power cable and check that you have the data cable in the correct spot. The lower the number on the motherboard the better. Sometimes if you plug the data cable into a socket with a white line around it the computer won't find it After everything is done reboot and see if it sees the drive.

You may have to go onto the manufacturers website and see if they have a download avaliable for your drive to work with windows 7, but be warned because Windows 7 is only new out the drive maker may not be up to speed on what works and what doesn't with Windows 7

You need to try it on a differant computer. That will let you know if the problem is the external drive or the usb ports on your computer.
Usually it is the usb interface on the external drive. You can buy a new usb enclosure and take the hard drive out of your passport drive and put it in the new enclosure. That will get you acess to your data again. You can find enclosures for as cheap as $14 so this is worth doing.

i wish i knew the answer, i am having the same problem. i have switched ALL of my toshiba computer power settings to no stand-by, no hibernation, no automatic shut down (as this was suggested) and windows xp still turns into a blank screen just a few seconds after plugging this in. hard drive too strong for my 3.5 year old computer? not sure, but this is beyond ridiculous.
