I have a an Hotpoint WT741G washing machine purchased new in July 2006. Unfortunately last night it started to make a noisey rattling sound then started leaking from the bottom trim. Can you help.

Black powder sounds like brushes are wearing down. If noise is severe, suspect bearings. With door open try wiggling the drum up and down. If it moves inside the tub, replace the bearings. Try new brushes first!
It could mean that either the bearings or the spider needs to be replaced. If you try to spin the wash basket by hand, does it turn smooth and quiet or do you hear a rumble sound? If it is noisy, it probally needs a bearing change. To change the bearing, the washer has to be taken completely appart to get access to the bearing. The parts cost are relatively inexpensive, but the labor costs is high due to the time to disassemble and reassemble the washer. If you are handy, and have the tools, you can buy the parts and do it yourself. You have to decide whether it is worth spending the time and money to fix or to purchase a new machine.
Make sure the appliance is perfectly level.
I assume the transit/shipping screws have been removed.
If problem persists, I would advise to ring the Hotpoint help line, and explain the problem to them.
please rate my solution.
Thankyou.
My machine is just over 3 years old and although there is no play in the rear drum bearing it is very noisey on spin.
It gets progessively loud the faster the spin speed.
probably a coin, dificult to get out unless you no how to access under the drum, if you use it a few times with a light load it will probably work its way down into sump hose filter.
Bearings faulty or another fault this model suffers from is the concrete balance weight retaining bolts shake loose, if it is the bolts tighten up as soo as possible.
