Washing Machine shuts off by itself during cycle

It went from shutting off late in the cycle to early in the cycle. It happened after we washed a comforter which we have done before and it was fine. There is a weird smell where the water has not drained too.

Not sure what you are saying.. if washer is off balance, it will shut off, check legs are secure to floor and unit is leveled. If washer lid isnt sealed or lid switch is bad it can shut off at spin or start cycle. Depends on unit model. The smell can be a burning belt from a heavy wet comforter or you have mildew from water not properly drained from unit.

My maytag topload washer overfilled,

It isn't a sensor problem, it sounds more like your water level tube has pulled loose. This is attached to the outer drum itself. You can see it when you remove your front cover to the right of the outer tub. This tube uses the pressure generated from your tub water level to push air up to your water level selector, which has a rubber membrane that flexes and closes 2 contacts as the water level makes the rubber expand. If that tube is off, the water will just keep running.

My washing machine (MAH4000AWW) stops during wash cycle. Door sometimes opens. If I tape it shut, this doesn't happen. What needs to be replaced?

You may need a new lid switch. It may need to be cleaned as may the lid switch actuator. Go to repairclinic.com for help in diagnosing the problem for your particular machine.

Water won't shut off during wash/rinse cycles & overflows

the clear tube going from the tub to the pressure switch probably came undone or has a hole in it

Shutting down on rinse cycle

Hi this could means that you may need to replace the washing machine bearings. Once the bearings are bad, the motor overheats and it will automatically shut down after the first rinse.

Washer goes into unbalance mode

Check the springs and spring mounts,(might be broken or not on right), also could be something wrong with the balance switch (where the tub hits the switch). It could be mis aligned or defective. Check the springs first.
