Epson Stylus C86. In XP, the status monitor component of the print driver automatically informed the user of the ink levels (at least, an estimate of them). In Vista, this was no longer automatic, but the user could get ink levels via the Printers on the Control Panel, by clicking Get Ink Levels button (instruction on Epson website). In Windows 7, no monitor and no "get levels" button. Any way to get ink levels with Win 7? Or is it time to switch pritners? Or printer mfrs?

YOU NEED TO DISABLE THE INK LEVEL MONITORS AFTER RE-FILLING THE
CARTRIDGES. GO TO PROPERTIES, MAINTENANCE, VIEW PRINTER STATUS, OPTION
AND CLICK ENABLE STATUS MONITOR ONCE.
Follow How to on epson status monitor for replacing ink tank. Or, turn on printer, immediatelly unplug power while carriage moving. Then move carriage by hand to replacement position.
I was able to install the original XP status monitor from the CD, onto Windows Vista Home Premium.
On the install cd, you need to open the 'STM3' folder under whatever language you are installing, 'English' in my case. There are several .exe files in that folder:
E_S1LAC2.EXE
E_SCHK02.EXE
E_SIINS2.EXE
E_SPSU02.EXE STMSETUP.EXE
For each of these, right click on the file, and choose 'Properties'. Under the 'Compaitbility' tab, choose 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' - Windows XP (Service Pack 2).
Then run the 'STMSETUP.EXE' file, and it should install properly, and work. Although I cannot guarantee that it will work on your system, or that it will not have any negative effects on your computer.
Go to your printers/faxes folder and right click on your printer and see if it's offline or similair.
If no joy, right click on it and uninstall printer.
Re-start your PC and let Windows find it again, but make sure the manufacturers driver automatically installs and not a Windows generic driver.
