The first thing in this unit is to check the ribbon cable that goes from the front control panel to the back ssb board, I would unplug and replug to make sure seated properly. Then try it again. There are alot of screws to take out but worth it if this solves the problem.
This sounds like a heat related problem, which could be a faulty chip or a cold (bad) solder joint on one of the PCBs (printed circuit boards). Due to the lethal voltages present inside a CRT type television, it is strongly advised to have this repaired by a qualified technician. however, if you or someone you know is technically inclined, you can try to fix this yourself. Cold solder joints can often be spotted by visible cracks in the solder joints. a through inspection of all the boards could easily identify the problem which can be resolved with a quick tap with a soldering iron and perhaps a little extra solder added to the joint. if that yields nothing, another method is heat/cold stressing the boards while the TV is running. With the TV on, spray small areas of the PCBs with cold spray (or a can of compressed air duster turned upside down) until the tv shuts off. then heat the last sprayed part with a hot air gun (or a hair dryer) until you can get the problem to repeat regularly. inspect the area causing the problem and you will probably find the culprit.
