Samsung rb2055sl. Refrigerator temperature is fine but freezer isn't

88 on its own is a Samsung code.

Did you check the evaporator coils at the back of the freezer. It the defrost timer, or the heater fails, if forms a large block of ice and there is no airflow.

If you have a frost free refrigerator then temp jumps as you discribe are somewhat normal during a defrost cycle. However it sound like your defrost temp may be getting too high. There is a limit thermostat on the freezer coils that keep the defrost temp from getting too high. The part is called a (defrost termination thermostat) and is a round disk about 1 to 1.5 inch in diameter clipped to the top of the freezer coils with 2 wires coming out of it. When cold, it allows power to the defrost heaters. At around 35/40 degrees it opens and shuts off power to the heater. 35/40 degrees sounds high for a freezer temp but that is behind the wall and only for a short time. Yours may be staying on too long or out of temp calibration needing replaced.

The most common part to replace is the timer motor. It's usually located on the back bottom of fridge, It's a little thingy about 1 1/2 " in diameter. One screw will usually get it loose where you can take a look at it better to see if it's turning. It has a small window where you can see a little wheel turning.

Check for ice build-up in and around the freezer fan where the blades are, if you can see ice in there (some times it may look like white foam but dont be fooled, it will be ice), the fan will be hitting it, defrost the freezer and check defrost element, (you will have to dismantle freezer section to get to it but reletively simple job) disconect from mains first. You have a bad defrost timer or a bad defrost heater.

The problem is freeze up. Bad door gasket or too much window shopping are the biggest issues. Could be low gas. Either take off the back freezer panel and defrost or unplug for 2 days to defrost fully. Oh, and clean the condenser coil. Then, let's see what the unit does.
