You’re right Brother authorized service centers are hard to come by and now that the one that I was working for went bankrupt I can’t buy parts any longer.
Let me see if I understand the problem. When you start typing it’s ok and as you continue typing it get’s lighter then it finally stops printing? If you let the machine sit like overnight it starts all over? If so what you need is a .20¢ rubber bumper used to lessen the hammer noise.
What happens is the rubber get’s sticky with the heat generated from use. I have tried to find a substitute (for the Brother part) and nothing I have found lasts very long. If you just remove the bumper the hammer makes a terrible racket (too noisy for more people), and I suspect if it were used without the bumper the hammer mechanism would rattle apart after a short time.
I know this can be repaired easily but not cheaply. The machine is old, it’s time to consider a replacement. Sorry!

Make certain the printwheel is latched fully into position. Observe the hammer movement while typing slowly NnNnNn. If the hammer does not come to rest at the same position every time the hammer cams are at fault. Make sure there is nothing interfering with the printwheel movement (like the correction tape or ribbon)
