Burning smell loud grinding noise when tilted

Hi there SmartAlec from NelsonVacuums.com.au here. The rattle is the clutch engaging. It can happen for a couple of reasons. The best case for you is if there is something caught in the brush roller that you can simply remove. The next best is that the end caps of the brush are full of junk that you will be able to remove. Its not easy getting the brush out to clean there but it can be done.
If the brush spins in your hand easily when the brush is removed then it is the clutch itself. THe main roller often melts which is caused when the tension on the belt gets to high thus creating too much heat. THis can be resolved only with a new clutch.
Hope this helps, if you have more questions dont hesitate to reply or if you need parts just visit

Dyson makes smell

You need to replace the belts. When they are worn they put off a smell. Here is the belt you need:

Belt doesn't turn and makes a loud clicking noise

You need to replace them. There is a clutch belt and a brush roll belt that need to be replaced. You can get them here:

Loud noise

It could be caused by a worn or stretched belt or debris in the roller brush. You can get a replacement belt here:

My dyson dc14 has a strong burning smell

A DC 14 has two belts - one that connects the motor ourput to the clutch mechanism (the dial that lets you turn off the brush rotation completely is part of the clutch mechanism), and another that connects the clutch to the brush bar.
Unfortuneatley, the one that connects the motor to the clutch is hidden under a plastic cover so is very difficult to check.
With the machine running, and NOT in the upright position (i.e. as if you were vacuuming a floor), make sure the brush bar is actually rotating. If it isnt, you need to check both belts and the clutch. Due to the cover being held by three "Torx" screws, one of which is very difficult to get at, this isnt easy.

If the brush bar is rotating, then the burning is an indication the motor is about to fail. Motor replacement is possible depending how good your DIY skills are, and again you'll need "Torx" drivers to dismantle it. Website www.dysonmedic.com has some very good info.

When I tilt back handel and turn dial to carpet It makes a loud grinding noise

On a Dyson this engages the brush bar. Two possible faults: Debris (hair etc) caught in brush bar - cut out with knife. Or - damaged drive belt - pieces of belt striking casing. Last, but unlikely cause, debris in bearings of brush bar - replace brush bar.

The brush on my dyson dc14 animal will not rotate

You probably have a broken belt. You need to take the plate off the bottom and see if the belt is broken. If so, contact Dyson (1-866-693-9766) to get another belt.

Dyson DC14 all floors.

sept 30,08 bought dc14 all flloor. After 3 to 4 uses it started making lots of noise when on carpet setting. I examined the roller brush and it was cracked at one end. I returned it Oct 13 ,08 and got another dc 14 all floor. Now this one after 2 uses has the same problem only a larger crack in the brush and a small piece of the brush broke off. Very dissapointed.
