Normally You have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screw(s) you need to remove.
Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) that demonstrates how it's done.
In some cases, you then have to gently rotate the handle to unlock it.
You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

I have a Kenmore Elite Microwave Oven - that I need to replace the door latch on... (plastic prong broke off - and I got new piece in the mail without any install instructions or door design) So, I do not...

Most of them you do have to carefully pry. You look on the inside of the door and you will see the choke seal. It runs around the whole outer edge on the inside of the door. Take a butter knife or a small screw driver and start to pop it up and out of the door. Slowly work around the door until it is completely free. Once you get that out you will see the door hook and will just have to look how it is mounted into the door. There will be a spring attached to it to allow it to pull up and down as the door is opened and closed. Make note of where the spring is attached to the inside of the door frame. It will have to hook onto your new part and back on the inner door.

I opened the door on my sharp microwave and now it wont latch. it sounded like something snapped off where the door latches to the microwave, not the door itself . Even if the door is held shut the light...

It may be the latch head spring or the door open lever or button.

DOOR SPRING LATCH HEAD HOOK

If you gently push up on the door latch heads (hook-like devices sticking out of the door) there should be spring tension. If they just flop right up, the spring is off inside.

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.

If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.

The door latch head (hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see how it goes together.

4c9c250.jpg

Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that demonstrates how it's done.

DOOR OPENING BUTTON LEVER

What usually breaks is the door open lever, but it may also be that the rear side of the door open button has worn down too far to work.

On a counter top model, the outer cover will need to be removed to diagnose and repair this. On an over-the-range model, only the control panel needs to be removed.

Please unplug the oven first.

Once it is apart, you'll be able to see how the door open button would press against the door open lever, which would then lift up against the door latch heads (hook-like projections on the door) and the door should open.

You can usually find exploded views and part numbers for Sharp models by entering your model number at the Sears parts site.

If not, let me know. We have many Sharp manuals and if we have yours, we can link you to it at no charge.

The best place to order Sharp parts is
Encompass (formerly Tritronics).

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number from the tag on the unit) for more information & help.

Door Doesn't latch shut

Usually it's not thespring but instead the "latch head", which has a little loop on the backside to hold the spring. The loop breaks off.

The latch head is the long plastic piece with two protruding hooks which activate the hidden door switches.

The door will need to be taken apart (but not removed from the oven!) to get to the latch head. See the attached example photo.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety and disassembly information at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Door Disassembly

Actually, the spring is probably okay. What breaks is either the latch head (with the hook-like protrusions) OR the spring mounting tab on the inner side of the outer door panel. The spring connects to both of these parts. The outer door panel is not availablke as a separate part, so if that's where the break is, you'll have to get a bit creative and clean it squeaky and use epoxy (like JB Weld, but never use "super glue") or you can drill into the panel slightly and install a small screw eye or glue it in place. Even if the spring mount on the inner door panel is not yet broken, while you're in there, it's a good idea to clean it squeaky and add some epoxy to strengthen it. To get to the screws, you have to remove the choke cover (see sample photo below). It's usually not necessary and is better not to remove the door. You can set the oven on its left side on a table top, open the door carefully, and ease it down to the table top. Then you have a level, stable area to work on the door. If the problem is the latch head (ref # 5-2-2) then I would recommend replacing that part instead of gluing it. That's because the new part may be an improved version. Plus you'll start out fresh. The part # is LSTPPB030MRF0 (zero on the end, not an "oh") You can order Sharp parts from http://wwww.wehaveparts.com You can find a helpful exploded view of the door here: http://207.234.249.73/mwd/r1480_control_door_exp.pdf
