Agitator stopped moving back and forth

Fills up with water but makes loud noise when its suppose to rotate back and forth, everything else works just not thhe aggitator Started a load of jeans, then suddenly it made a loud noise and the agitator doesn't work now. I would appreciate if I can get some help with what it could be. We are thinking it is either the agitator or transmission. Thank you for any response,

Yes, the spin cycle does work. Once the clothes were in the washer and the cycle started the agitator would not move.

  • Theresa Henry May 28, 2009

The top half turns counter clockwise and doesn't spin clockwise.

Yes, it is under 5 years old. I really appreciate all the advice you gave me. This is the last thing I needed to have happen. As the saying goes if it wasn't for bad luck have no luck at all. lol! I guess just get it fixed and go on. something else will break later. no doubt.

Hi, Can you tell me if the spin cycle works? It sounds like maybe a couler has gone bad. Also check and see if the lower half of the agitator is working at all.
Please let me know and I can help you through this.

Thanks
Vic

Ok, If this is a two piece agitator and the lower half does not agitate, then sounds like something gave way inside the transmission. Is this unit under 5 years old?

If the upper half sits still but the lower half still works ok, then you need to change the agitator dog kit in the top of the agitator.

With the machine off, try and turn the upper part of the agitator. Does it turn one way and not the other or does it turn both ways?

    Please let me know.

Ok, Then the transmission has gone bad. They are about $175.00.

If this is under five years old, you might still have a warranty.

I would call the 800 # located on the lid of the washer (have model & serial #'s) and ask about warranty.

Please feel free to rate my responses to your problem so others as well as myself will know how I am doing.

Agitator quit working during wash cycle. If I move timer to rinse and fill with water then move timer to spin the agitator works fine and drains water from the tub

depends on what u mean by agitator works fine on spin? it doesnt do anything on spin cycle cause its not suppose to? if ur saying ur not getting any wash agitation? then I suspect ur cam dogs inside agitator are bad? remove the 7/16 bolt nut and remove top of agitator and u will see the cam dogs underneath it. there fairly cheap like 5-10 bucks for a set, if u can push the agitator back and forth when its all together in tub, and its catching the teeth and not easy to move back in forth, their not bad, but if u have no resistance then they are bad

Not spinning or rinsing?

After the machine fills the next step is to agitate. By agitate I mean the wash portion. The plastic fin in the middle of the tub rotates back and forth. So, after the washer fills, if the machine does not agitate, but stops dead, you have a broken lid switch. When I say stops dead, I mean no noise whatsoever. If the machine makes noise you have other problems.

If the machine fills, agitates, and then stops dead, the problem is still the lid switch. The next step would be describing the noise so I can more accurately give a suggestion. Problems include but are not limited to: broken couplers, malfunctioning water pumps, and/or defective motors or transmissions. These are the vast majority of the problems, and the others need no mention.

With a model number I can give a part number of the lid switch, and or other problematic parts. Also, I can give you an average price of the parts. With this information you could order it yourself and save money :) The model numbers are located under the lid of the washer. Not physically on the lid, but right under it. Get eye level with the top of the washer and you will see it ;)

WHIRLPOOL TOP LOAD WASHER MAKING GRINDING NOISE FOR AGITATION

When you put the motor in did you replace the coupler between the motor and transmission? When fixing the agitator you need to get the agitator repair kit, It has seals, dogs, thrust plate, cam bearing and seals. The upper agitator is supposed to move only in one direction to get the clothes to move down towards the agitator. Do not overload machine. I have one of these and after 12 years I finally had to install this upper repair kit because the upper agitator quit moving. You may have an agitate cam that is going bad inside the transmission

Agitator always moving

The inner tub on some machines does rotate very slowly while filling to assist with the even distibution of the load. If the agitator is turning back & forth while in fill mode, you could have a timer or transmission problem. You need a tech.

Grinding niose from agitator.

If the fill and drain functions correctly, AND the spin cycle works correctly, AND the cycle itself starts and completes correctly, the problem being that the back and forth motion of the agitator starts the loud grinding noise, it will likley be broken gears in the transmission. The single most expensive part in the washing machine.
