The display screen is always blank - on camera mode.
I $5.00 because the same thing was goin on...I went into page 2 or 3....find the word date code push it and change and it should work fine..mine does..
I had the same problem and when I called them to my surprise there has been a recall because of this problem . Wow I then asked the sony spokesperson why I did not recieve information about this problem his answer to my shock was well not every camcorder is having this problem so they wont tell you of the recall unless you ask
I know that it was been over a year ago that you answered this, but do you have their number to call? I recently found my sony handycam DCR-HC20 and it rarely shows the screen, but I just gave hope on it. Theres a black screen but it can still record sounds and I can watch old tapes etc. Can you please email me at [email protected] Thank you!

The ccd image sensor of your camera is defective that why is no image you see..better go to sony service center for replacement of the sensor...

I bought my DCR-HC20 before 2004 and just now is having ccd problems, no picture is showing on LCD but I am able to see/hear previous recorded tapes. I went to Sony website, as recommended at fixya, and was able to print a service request. Go here:

I have the same problem with my handycam DCR-HC20. For some reason, I can play back and view no problem, but cannot film anymore. Screen is dark, as though the cap is on it. It was barely used in 4 years, practically brand new, never dropped. I am pretty mad, it wasn't cheap. Please help!!
My sonyhandycam HC20 has no video, only audio. It pisses me off, and I have not even used it much! I've tired everything but can't get it on.
Yeah, I have the HC20 too. And I am more than pissed off. I have used this camera MAYBE 10X. Never dropped, never wet, always stored in a safe place. Then one day nothing on the screen, just sound. Plays back old tapes, but won't record for SH*T. Like the rest of you guys, I paid a decent amount for this camera. Thought I had a good product. I'm going to try that website, but I'm pretty sceptical, because I once had a problem with a Sony PS2, but Sony wouldn't fix it because I couldn't find the 9 month old receipt. So... My hopes aren't very high right now.
Same damn problem with Sony Handycam DCR H20! Again, onyl three years old and piece of junk. Won't record... screen is black. What to do???
