Everthing seems to work, except the camera will not record.

Assume you have Sony DCR-HC20 camcorder and it does not show you live view to record, I hope camcorder is playing back old recorded tapes perfectly with good quality picture on its LCD.
If it is true then your camcorder has ccd imager chip failure and ccd imager needs to be replace to get live view in LCD monitor.
Qualified camera tech will replace ccd imager chip.
Thanks.

When I turn my camera on and try to record, nothing shows up on the screen.

Make sure lens cover is open, if still camcorder does not show live view then it is bad ccd imager chip problem that will be replaced.
Let me know exact model of your Sony camcorder to provide you part number info of ccd imager chip.
Thanks.

Sony handycam DCR-HC20 NTSC trouble

I had same problem. Got lucky and found Westpeak Electronic
Services in Calgary, AB in Sept 2009. I left it there, they replaced and aligned the ccd imager free of charge and mailed it to me a week later. I live in British Columbia.
Their number is 866-410-Sony

Hope this helps

Nothing in viewfinder or on screen

Same thing happened to me. Seems to be 'common' although Sony says they have no recall on the CCD. Look around the forum and you will find others with the same problem.

Black and white playback with sony handycam dcr-hc20

There is no problem on your camera, DCR-HC19E is PAL system(European system) DCR-HC20 is NTSC(American system). Are you in US or Europe? I think your TV is NTSC, cause the tape recorded on DCR-HC19E you played has no color. To confirm, connect your HC20 to TV in camera mode, not recording yet, just look at the TV as your monitor, If its in color, no problem, just erase the old video recorded on the HC19E, but if its important to you, you can convert it to NTSC using a PC. thanks
