It is so common that the washing machine can make terrible noise in many ways and is a common fault. In all occasions it is important that your observation is most important and so is vital to the identification /rectification and solution. If you have noticed that machine is vibrating when it is running then the motor /drum suspension has to be inspected. Since these fittings are located on the underside of the machine it is important that you look for the noise with a good inspection lamp. Manually turn the motor and drum and listen for the noise, if so the motor bearings, the drum agitator shaft and fittings must be checked. Also the suspensions which include the shock absorbers and springs, the body clamps must be checked to be in correct alignment and not changed in position. Tightening of the mounting is also very important. Finally in most cases a drop of OIL or smear of grease on the moving parts cane solve most issues.

SOURCE: My washing machine won't agitate and it's making a grinding noise

if its direct drive ( no belts ) there is a plastic coupler that joins the motor to the transmission that shears off when the machine has been overloaded. lay machine on its side look from underneath and look for small plastic pieces on the floor and if so you need to replace the coupler this has happen to us alot of times and we have fixed it ourselves . hope this helps

SOURCE: machine will not agitate. makes noise

HI. This issue you are having concerning the noise you are hearing from the agitator, can be resolved by replacing the clutch assembly. This assembly is responsible for initiating the agitating nature of this device. Seems to be some stripped out pieces that are vital to smooth and correct motion. I would also take a good look at the drive shaft assembl;y as well. there may be parts here that may need to be replaced as well. Finally, I would check to make sure the gear case(tranmission) is also functioning correctly. i suspect the clutch assembly is stripped or missing some vital parts that have broken off.

please rate and god bless.

How do I remove the agitator from LG top Load washer

the agitator is held by a bolt with a 7/16 drive nut located inside the middle of agitator from the top downward? however by ur description sounds like maybe u have bad bearing in the hub? the cam dogs in the agitator dont usually make any noise especially when bad they just dont allow the agitator to move or catch the groves to agitate. The grinding could also be coming from something stuck inside the tub or on its outside and thus is hitting the wall lining and makes a screeching scraping sound, Ive seen this several times, a bra wire, or loose coin or key, etc

Grinding washing machine agitator

more than likely the pump is the part that is making the noise. You can verify this by leaning the machine back where you can see the pulleys, your pump will be the one in the back. Remove the belt and each pulley should turn smoothly. The part number for the pump is 35-6780

Sounds like a transmission problem. Not worth the repair judging from age.
