try to clean your machine by playing a lens cleaner disc coz the lens might be dirt enough not to pick on data from the discs you play. if it does not work then isuggest you change the lens coz it might be weak

try recording on a re-writeable dvd i had exactly the same problem on a dr-m100 (the more primitive version of the dr-m100s) as follows: -- heard a distinct pop while recording -- after that, an error message indicating that i am trying to record on a write protected disk, even though i am not. recording on standard blank dvd now impossible. -- unit still plays dvd normally, except it takes twice as long to find beginning of program -- wierdly, it still records on re-writeable dvd's. the re-writeable dvd must be formatted correctly. the unit still formats re-writeable dvds normally

Press and hold the Progressive Scan button for more than 3 seconds. It should clear right up.
SOURCE: how do i put a tape recording onto the pc?
dg9dotorg is correct about the memory card. The memory card and USB cable can be used to transfer still images only. To transfer the video you need a DV cable (also called a Firewire cable).
If your PC is relatively new it most likely has a firewire port. If it does not then you'll need to purchase a firewire card.
You will also need software to capture the video. I use Scenalyzer. You can download a demo version of this software at no charge. The link is http://www.scenalyzer.com/
The demo version is fully functional, but it will put a watermark on your video.
Good luck.
SOURCE: record directly from jvc model GR-- D370U Digital Video Camera to my pc
Sorry, but it's not possible to record directly to a PC. Windows movie maker will only record from a tape. Please use a quality cable like Belkin, I have had issues with the cheaper firewire cords.
Good luck
