Reinstall your video driver just go the site of your Laptop manufacture. Once there enter the model number OR service tag of the laptop then request driver (usually found in the web site's "Support Section"). There you should be able to find all the drivers for your model laptop
Check for registry issues
Start the computer in safe mode and run System Restore
If this didn't help you then simply get the Intel software partner reliable program "RegInOut" to fix these errors which causing black screen.

Switching the display output location.
Switch between the computer display and an external monitor. If an external monitor is attached, the computer output is displayed in the following three patterns by turns:

• External monitor (CRT display)
• Computer display and external monitor (LCD + CRT display)
• Computer display (LCD)

Notes:

• For any operating system other than Windows 2000 or Windows XP, no additional procedure is needed. Just press Fn+F7.
• This function is not supported if different desktop images are displayed on the computer display and the external monitor (the Extend desktop function).
• This function does not work while a DVD movie or a video clip is playing.

To enable this function in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the following procedure is needed:

1. When you log on to Windows 2000 and Windows XP for the first time, press Fn + F7 and select a display-switching function in the Initial setup window. Since in Windows 2000 and Windows XP multiple users can log on to a single operating system by using different user IDs, each user needs to select the function in the initial setup window when logging on for the first time.
2. If the Fn + F7 key combination have been assigned to a presentation scheme function, start Presentation Director, and change the settings.

You need winxp bootable disk for format or repair your winxp.
Then boot your computer with that disk.
For that when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key to enter in bios .
Then set first boot device in bot option as your cd or dvd rom.Then save settings .
Then put your disk in rom then it boot with it.

Hi jsc,

It sounds like your internal video card which is used to display information to the LCD is defective. I would recommend taking it in to a hardware shop to have them take a look, and if it is under warranty still, to send it back to the manufacturer for them to fix.

sounds like your video is going out wheather its your card or lcd not sure but kinda sounds like the screen

if you are formatting your computer for the first time and if you bought your computer after 2005 then just press <Ctrl> + <F11> keys right at the dell logo on startup, you will boot to dell PC restore. This will restore your computer back to the factory settings including WinXP, all the drivers and softwares.

If you bought your computer before oct 2005: then follow these steps.

1) start you computer and at the dell splash logo tap <Del> key to enter setup. (restart and retry till you see entering setup)
2) select Boot from the tabs above using arrow keys.
3) select boot device priority press <ENTER>.
4) select ATAPI CDROM, <ENTER>.
5). insert WIN XP CD in the top drive of the computer and press <F10> select yes.(this will restart your computer).
6) after reboot you will see " press any key to boot from CD" press any key within 5 sec on this message.
7) Press <ENTER> to install
8) Press <F8> on next screen
9) Press <ESC> on next screen(Options may vary on this screen , read instructions).
10) select partition using arrow keys press <ENTER>
11) select NTFS/NTFS quick, anyone. and press F on the next screen...

this wil start WIn XP set up and concludes the formatting of the HDD with Win XP CD.

To manually edit the boot options file, click Edit. Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not modify the boot options file (Boot.ini), because doing so may render your computer unusable.
