It could be that the color cartridge is not seated properly or just needs cleaning. If that doesn't help, the problem could be due to a clogged print
cartridge nozzle. Please follow the steps below to fix print quality issues
with your model: From the Maintenance tab, select Clean to fix horizontal streaks.
Your printer will then print a page forcing ink through to clean the print
cartridge nozzles. After printing the test page, try to print a document again to
verify that the problem is fixed.
Try to re-seat your color ink cartridge. Open the printer cover > remove the color cartridge > re-insert the color cartridge and make sure it's properly seated > close the printer cover. Try to print again to verify that the problem is fixed.

Unfortunately the printer wont print unless there is ink in both cartridges

In this case what i would request u to do is....... Take out both the catridges from the Printer......... Take 2 Paper Towels one should be wet with Luke warm water and the other one should be dry........... Take the Colour catridge first turn it upside down and u will see a small copper plate on the catridge from where the ink comes out....... Place the wet paper towel using ur thumb on the Copper plate and press it a lit bit for 10 Seconds...... Now remove it and see whether u see any ink on the paper towel.......... U should see some ink on it now place the dry paper towel on the ink catridge in the same way........ Now do the same procedure again.......... Do the same procedure twice on the Black Catridge................. Now take the dry paper towel and turn the direction of the cartridge so that u can see a Copper plate on it with small boxes just clean that copper plate with the Dry Paper Towel.......... Know insert both the catridges inside the Printer the Colour Catridge should go in the right side and the black on the left........ Unplug the Power Supply from the printer....... Press and hold the Stop/Clear button on the Printer and Plug in the Power Supply while holding the Stop/Clear button it should say clearing on the screen at that point u can go ahead and release the Stop/Clear button.......... Now the Printer will ask for the Date Time and Country Language......... Set everything up...... Now try to Print i am sure it should work.......... Good Luck............

SOURCE: Can't use black cartridge only to print
Unfortunately it is all true.
Personally I would stay away from Lexmark, I am a Canon fan, the MP520 looks real nice, but it's personal choice at the end of the day.
SOURCE: Replaced ink cartridge but printer is not acknowledgeing
wipe clean the tip of the catridge and also the sensor of the catridges. good luck

A "place ink cartridge in carrier slot" message appears eventhough ink cartridges are already installed. Have tried cleaning all possible connections on the cartridge and the carrier slot. Blanks when printing
