Hi,

Run the check disk utility on drive D.

To do this on XP click on the start menu and then click on run, type in the box cmd and hit enter, a command window will pop up.
In that window type chkdsk d: /f /r and hit enter (don't forget the spaces)

With Vista click on the start menu (orb) and type in the search bar cmd and hit enter. Again a command window will pop up so type in the window chkdsk d: /f /r and hit enter (don't forget the spaces)

In both cases you maybe asked to if you want to schedule a disk check next time you restart the computer, if it asks you this type y and hit enter type exit and restart the machine.

Chances are that it might ask this as D drive will be a storage so disk checking will commence straight away.

Be patient and wait for check disk to finish and then see if you can access your files.

Good luck and please post back if you need anymore help.

Regards.

I'm sorry but the drive is corrupt.

The only thing i suggest you do now is download Testdisk for windows and pray that it recovers the file system for you otherwise your looking at data recovery which can be very costly.

Click on the link that i have provided below and select windows (in blue), it will be in a zip/rar file so you will need to extract the program and run/install it.

    Download Testdisk here >>>>>>>>

The very best of luck to you and please get back to me just in case i can help you out further.

I'm sorry to see that. It looks like your going to have to send the drive in to have to have the data recovered.

The only last resort i can think of and then i would be resigned to the fact that the drive is corrupt, and that is to try the MBR and file fixing tools is hirens boot cd, these tools (and there's plenty of them) may be able to recover the drive.

Scroll down the page and download the file. It should be an ISO file
which is a CD image you have to burn the image to a CD and then restart
your computer and boot from the CD to access the tools as the only
really work in DOS mode. (link below)
Download Hirens boot CD here >>>>>>>>>

Good luck and please let me know how the recovery goes.

Can't find my 3 physical drives and shown as combined free space

Try in computer management righ clicking and mark as active if it wants you to format well no to that. I cant understand how this would happen either but its your best bet. If that doesnt work get the hard drive out and plug it into a desktop PC as a second drive, it may just appear if not youre looking at data recovery software. Good luck from Scott

Cant access files on my harddrive

Hello,

It sounds like either the enclosure or the drive inside has failed.

If the enclosure has failed and you don't have any crucial files on it that you don't already have elsewhere, contact Maxtor(Seagate) for a warranty replacement.

If the enclosure has failed and you DO have important files on it, try having your local PC shop move the hard drive into a new enclosure, if that works you're done, buy the new enclosure.

If the new enclosure fails, your drive is damaged and you will need a pro to help get back your files. If this is the case, reply back with you location(Country, State and City) and I will pass along recommendations for your neck of the woods.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Hi, my passport worked fine a couple of days ago whilst i was transfering data to vista. Today when trying to access it, it doesnt show up, it shows local disk but not as WD, and you cant see any...

First thing to try is other usb devices as well as trying the drive in a different port. Preferably one away from the original to make it use a differeant hardware controller inside your computer. Also try unpluggin all usbs and rebooting a couple of times.

And try your drive in another computer to make sure it is working. if it isn't it may just be the enclosure electronics are the problem. If you have important stuff on it then you can try taking the drive out of that and putting it into a universal usb drive enclosure to get it up and running again.

Hi, there. I try to plug my Lacie 500gb (or something like that) into my pc laptop and it whirrs in a stuttered and broken way and does not show up when I look for it on explorer. However, it shows up fine...

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it.
If not - try to remove the drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer to recover your files.

So, does it spin on power on or not?
Anyway, if you need that data try to remove the internal drive from enclosure and connect it directly to the computer.
