PS3 says DNS error (80710102) when i try to connect to the internet with a wired connection

Hi, it would be marvelous to sit back and play challenges online with my new PS3 console :D

Although ... with help from my ISP (AOL) with the connection details i need it still doesn't work! When going through the settings manually the console recognises my IP address but not the DNS. When contacting AOL with the info they gave me i'm only given one DNS code or (DNS Server) from my comp? Which could be why its not connecting?

When trying automatic for the console to recognise the server itself, neither options IP or DNS work but misrably fail.

I've read on reviews i may need to change my firewall settings, but i think the DNS needs to be correct first from what the PS3 Internet Connections Settings say.

Any help would be much appreciated, i will work for food !

My internet connection and online play were working flawlessly until a couple of days ago. Now I am having the same problem. I manually entered the ip address, and what I think is the default router (is this the same thing as default gateway?), and the primary dns numbers (I used the dns servers number found in windows using the command prompt ipconfig/all).

When I try to hook up also everything goes fine until the screen pops up with DNS error. How can I solve the problem

  • Wigluff Dec 26, 2007

I'm sick and tired of this provocative problem. My poblem is that it's not connecting to PlayStaion Network, but there's internet connectivity and everything. While I'm signing in to the PlayStation Network, at the end it tells me this "There was a problem while communicating with the server, this is a DNS problem (80710102)".

This problem remained so for a day and still no solution. That's all.

  • dangthing Feb 20, 2008

When I get online I often have the DNS 80710102, this is something that is not fixed by simply waiting on my system and trying again. I think that if I used an Ethernet cable it would fix the problem but thats not an option for me. My PS3 and internet are fine but this plagues me many days. I think it has to do with the amount of data being sent over the server. Sometimes if I turn off and then turn back on my PS3 while resetting the wireless router and Ethernet box it fixes it but that only works on some occasion.

I'm trying to connect my PS3 to the internet via the settings panel.  I've entered the i.p. address and the PS3 found it alright.  It failed the internet connection test saying a DNS error 80710102 occurred, after I put in the router and DNS numbers. Those two numbers are the same in my computers preference settings. Is this the problem?

same old story like thousands of PS3 users worldwide! It just doesn't connect. I have a Linksys wireless router and subsequently a infrastructure network. I already put the rec. DNS addresses 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 in the router, still....

My server uses the 192.168.0.1 address for co(ll)nnecting my 6 laptops to the Internet, and my router uses the 192.168.1.1. That's it.
Tried already around 50 times with all variations, followed the youtube clips, but no result.

I have just to wait, until the world gets rid of this prob I guess....
    Take care
    Gerry

My problem is almost the exact same. Yesterday, a comcast worker came out to establish a new internet connection in my room, he changed a few internet settings, but he said he couldn't do anything for me and left. I then moved my playstation into my computer room, where I normally play online, and the exact thing happens, It can find the IP address, but it can't find the DNS.

Mine works *sometimes.* I'm usually able to use the automatic IP and DNS. But sometimes when I turn off the PS3 for a day or two, it's like it's dumb again and can't get the IP. When I put in the IP, it fails at DNS.
I've read so many solutions, but none work for every configuration (I don't even HAVE a router...it's a bridged connection, so most solutions are worthless for me). Anyway, this is highly aggravating and I have to spend 30 minutes trying to get it to connect every few days.

Im trying to set up wireless internet on my ps3. But It' keeps on ******* saying DNS Error (80710102) .

I know my DNS Primary and Secondary numbers.
To find these write in your Ip address in the url search bar.
To find your Ip address, Go into ''Start=>write in search cmd., put the dot at the end of cmd. now. Then a black list comes up.Then without clicking anywere write in ipconfig/all . Your settings will come up then.

It might work for other users. Hope this helps.

Just simply try "Disable" your internet connection... Then wait a moment...
"Enable" it again... and voila..!! At least it worked for me, don´t
know if it resets the internet connection or someth like that.

Tried before that to unplug cords and cables, doing the test etc but
no... But Disabling - Enabling internet connection worked for me in a
    pinch.

    Cheers!!!

For mine i tried other fixes and they didn't work. Turns our my router had enabled security but the PS3 had forgotten the password (WEP key).

I turned off the WEP on my router and the PS3 suddenly found its connection.

To say I was getting stressed is an understatement, Sony should put something on their website, it seems like a really commonm problem to which people have no clear route to solution.

Yesterday my ps3 wouldnt log in to the PSN because of a dns error (80710102) but i managed to fix it. i knew it wasnt my modem or ethernet cable because theyre brand new. To fix it follow these steps carefully. First go to your computer and go to RUN then type in CMD then type in ipconfig/all and click enter to bring up your ip adress and such. write down all your information like ip adress/subnet mask/gateway/dhcp server/dns servers. Then go to your ps3 and go to network settings and disable media server idk why but helps. Next go to internet connection and click wired connection. Manually type in the ip adress and subnet mask and dns ect., this should take a while. Next select do no use proxy server and select everything else in automatic. The upnp set to do not use. Click yes and a connection test will begin, IT WILL FAIL. Next Turn off ps3 and restart modem. Turn Ps3 and Modem back on and go to network setting click wired connection and then easy. It will do a connection test and it will work. You are now back online ready to play. if not restart ps3 only.

I FIXED THE DNS ERROR

Like everyone else I had the same issue. After searching the web for days for the answer the solution was simple. If you know your connections/settings are correct (i.e. you can surf the net on your PS3) turn off your ps3 using the switch in the back. DO NOT turn off the ps3 using the gamepad or power button on the front of the machine.

I think whats happening is the PS3 is hanging on the DNS when you quit an online game using the gamepad. I now exit the online function of the particular game then quit the game. Once I am back to the PS3 main screen I shut off system. I haven't had the DNS error since.

Hope this helps.

my DNS error was caused by time warner internet problems. THe solution was to get DNS server address from opendns.com

I found that disable Media Server worked for me as well, but I found the idea of not having access to the music on my router unacceptable. One of the responses above mentioned UPnP, and that was the key, though there needs to be a bit more detail.

I'm using a Linksys WRT54GS, and disabling UPnP on the PS3 settings was the first step, but disabling it on the router was the second step. Now I have access to both the Playstation Network AND my laptop's hard drive.

On my Linksys router I did this by going into the "Administration" tab, and in the default sub-tab ("Management"), the bottom option was UPnP. I set that to disable and everything works now. This might work on other brand routers too, but I can't give directions on how to turn of UPnP on other brands of routers as all I use is Linksys.

I had this error straight out of the box when I needed a game update (FIFA 2008). I was able to connect online to update the system itself, but then I couldn't get the download for the game update. I turned off my computer, then rebooted my router. This did the trick and I was then able to get the game update no problem. I'm really not a gear head so I can't say for sure whether the computer being off the network had anything to do w/ it. But I suspect resbooting the router did the trick.

Yes i had this problem too, but i solved it by changing the security type from WEP to WPA in the ps3 options , then i entered the key which is available in your router settings at http://192.168.1.1

I have a FIX. And yes this works EVERY time if your PC internet is working fine. Do manual internet set up and do:
IP Address any ip address that is not used in your house
Subnet Mask Your computers subnet mask: Usually 255.255.255.0
Defualt Gateway your Main PC's IP address, usually ending in 0.1
DNS1 208.67.222.222 < These 2 are the ost important. Do exactly that.
DNS2 208.67.220.220

Important : always follow the 'easy ' and ' auto ' setup options when establishing a connecting to the internet via your PS3 and wireless router on your computer ( apart from when getting to the ' WEP ', that has to be done manually ).
First make sure you have a ' network name, password & WEP KEY code ' set up via your router ( your network name can be added on the PS3 under ' SSID ' when prompted, if it already isn't, but should, be there by now ). Then follow your SSID via auto until you see ' WEP '. Then type in your WEP KEY number ( should be given when getting your ' SSID and password ' on your computer ) ; 26 numbers and letters in all and mixed ( case sensetive, so type in the letters how they appeared when given them ; normally higher casing ) ; press ' enter, twice ' after you have typed in the KEY and this will take you back to your ' WEP ' . Then follow the auto till you get to the end and press ' enter ' ( X on the pad ).
All should be working now with full internet connectivity.
Hope this helps.

Bypass your Router. Anyone who connects to Sony servers to "update a new game" directly through their gateway do not have this problem. Sonys servers will drop your connection and kick you off the server preventing you from downloading important updates. Due to configurations on most routers is the reason your download will stall out. Connect the ethernet cable from your PS3 directly into your gateway (bypassing the router), enter network settings on the PS3 and setup a "wired connection", select "automatic on all questions asked, then allow to "test connection". Once connection is successful load up your new game and enjoy your complete download. Now that you have your update, you can re-connect your router as it was before.

Hello all

I had the same problem trying to get online and failing due to DNS server error. My PS3 is hard wired directly from the modem(Motorola surfboard). I tried, for 3 days, trying different methods.
The method that worked for me was Solution 21 by BRAVO above. I did exactly as he stated and bravo all sorted. Happy online gaming.
BRAVO I owe you a very BIG drink. Thanks buddy.

Check with your serive provider, it could be as simple as you haven't paid your bill.......
If not they will provide you with your Primary and Secondary DNS. Your I.P address is in System Information in PS main menu.

Hey, Rebooting my router and restarting my ps3 worked for me. The DNS problem is terrible, it happens on almost all ps3's connected to a router at some point, and the solution is always an easy one, but you just need to play around with settings and reboot your router. all the advice given by everyone usually works though

I had the same problem. It took me two days to figure it out but, try this. EVEN IF YOU HAVE A WIRED CONNECTION, SELECT WIRELES.

Enter the DNS numbers as PRIMARY 4. 2. 2. 2
SECONDARY 4. 2. 2. 1

I hope it works for you. If not, goodluck.

Solution #4 worked for me.
Under the network settings for your ps3, disable the Media Server Connection. Then try again.

I was also getting intermittent connectivity for no apparent reason. This especially occurred when I would try to run any kind of update. Once disabling the Media server there were no more issues!

Hi, I had same problem. Turned out it was my Linksys router. I went to Linksys website and went onto their Live Chat. I was advised to update my Firmware for router. I did contact ISP (Virgin) before hand, turns out that there was nothing they could do because issue was either with PS3 or Router.
However if the above fails, and you are comfortable with it, try putting your encryption of the router from 128bit to 64bit.
After this everything was on automatic and it did it itself. Hope this helps.

Disable the internet connection and put your playstation on and restart the whole thing so it seems your installing a new internet source. Go on options to the internet. You may be entered in the wrong password either using your internet password provided from your internet provider. You are suppose to use the password you made for yourself. Hope this helps.

Dns means your ps3 and your modem is not communicating together. i had the same problem and what it did is call your internet provider and tell them whats happening and hell send a signal to the modem. if this does not work try rebooting the modem. my problem was that my ethernet cable wasnt working properly, i went and bought one and problem was solved.

ONLY IF IT WAS WORKING

If your PS3 is on wireless and has suddenly stopped going online or signing in, try disabling any new security you have installed on you wired computer. Such as fire wall or spyware killers, they can some times mess with the PS3 connection telling it what it is and is not allowed to do. If this doesn't work please try the turning it on and off method

NOW YOU SHOULD HAVE IT FIXED!!!
I know THE SOLUTION FOR THIS PROBLEM (when you use LINKSYS WRT54G) don't know of this works out for other too but give it a try !!

I've spend hours on this looking.. but I'll spare you my life story..

The first thing you do is look up the MAC-adress of your ps3 which can be found in your network configurations pannel.
once you found this you note this somewhere on a sheet of paper.
Next you go to your linksys router (on your pc)
You can acces this by typing 192.168.1.1 in your browser.
when you are there search were you can fill in a MAC-adress and replace the one you've got by the one of your ps3 (on sheet of paper)

OK so far so good. Then you will have a NAT-type 2 instead of 3 (which means that you don't have to fill in your configurations like DNS and Ip-adress manually) So this you don't get a DNS error.

Then go to network configurations on your ps3 and use simple or advanced (I don't think this makes a difference =) )
But I took simple. Next set everything on automatic. IT IS ALSO IMPORTANT THAT YOU USE THE RIGHT WEP-key (which can also be found in your router configurations)
=> (192.168.1.1 in browser and settings) or ask me if you don't find this

And don't use proxy server or UpNp (the last one makes no difference with me)
ENJOY THE ONLINE PARADISE GAMING AND DOWNLOADING OF PS3!!

feel free to ask questions if this wasn't clear =)

Under the network settings, disable the Media Server Connection. You won't need that anyway. Then try again. Should work.

Wow that fixed my problem! I worked all day on it and it turns out that was the problem! Thank you so so much!

Hi every1 i'm not sure if this will work for every1 but i simply turned of my router for 30 secs then back on again. Sony also advise this as its 90% the cause of the problem. Your PS3 reads it as a DNS problem because it cant connect to the server. hopefully this helps but i agree with a few people on here, Sony should really put a link on there web site for such a common problem.

First, you're still using AOL? I thought they were dead! lol Second, I find it strange that people feel the need to connect their system's internet through a computer or laptop. Though, if you are capturing video, I guess I could see why. However! Domain Name Server (DNS) rarely plays a part in connecting to a standard system configuration, either wired or wireless. Here is a standard configuration if using an external modem. Line comes in, connecting to your internet modem. It may, or may not have multiple cat5 outlets. Assume it only has 1. The cat5 connects from the modem to a router determined by 3rd party(owner) with the ability to set up the WEP. This router is either wired, or has both multiple outlets and wifi capabilities. With a cat5 from the router to a pc, you have access to the router to configure all settings, such as changing the wep and security key, and blockable websites and keywords. After you enable everything on the router from your pc, simply connect a cat5 from the router to the system and no further action is required. Or if connecting wireless, make sure you have the info you need to enter for the security key, select "Wireless" in the options in the PS3, enter your key, then test connection. Everything else is automatic.

I've dealt with this PS3 wireless error quite a bit and I just figured out a resolution. Go into your wi-fi router's settings, go to the DHCP/wi-fi settings, look for your primary and secondary DNS servers, enter the same IP address as your gateway IP. For example (this differs from different wi-fi router brands), if your gateway IP address is 192.1.1.0, then make your primary and secondary DNS servers 192.1.1.0.

Also, I changed the channel on my 2.4 GHz frequency from auto to 5, auto is the default.

You can assign an IP address to your PS3 but make sure it's within the range of your DHCP pool, for example if the range is 192.1.1.1 -192.1.1.199, then choose 192.1.1.10, or whatever other number you want as long as it's within this range.

On your PS3 this has to be all done manually on wireless IP, subnet, gateway and DNS settings, leave all other settings on default.

On a side note, I hope Sony makes it easier for people to connect their wireless since I never have this problem on my iPhone, TV, DirecTV wi-fi AP, laptop or tablet, and they're all connected on the same wi-fi router.

Also, why Sony doesn't include WPS in addition to the AOSS standard for connecting wireless devices? WPS is far more prevalent than AOSS, which is usually only used by Buffao wi-fi routers. WPS is more universal while AOSS is not. Enabling WPS would bypass all of these problems.

First off Im using a wired connection to my pc and a verizon wirless usb modem. One problem i had was the ethernet cable if this is your setup u will need to bye a crossover type ethernet cable they look like the standard ethernet cable that comes with the ps3 but they r internally different and it will say crossover on the side. Mine`s white and i purchased it at radio shack for $50.00u.s. Secondlly I have McAfee antivirus plus installed and all computers networked to mine have to be named and trusted within McAfee adversly the ps3 cant be recognized and therefore cant be named because there system can really only see pc`s and desktops thus when I want to play online i must uninstall McAfee and Im good to go then:) I reinstall when Im done its a pain but I`ve about six mounths left on my subscription needless to say when it runs out I will see about a different brand of antivirus and hope I don`t still have this same problem. Also a note be sure that you set sharing properties up within your network to "on" and select local area network hopfully u know how. O and i always goto network conections on my ps3 and hit custom then just scrole strait across in order to connect the first time

There are a number of different things you can try to fix this problem; I suggest you work through the list in a methodical fashion until your console is working again properly:

  1. Turn of the Media Server Connection.

  2. Reset your network router.

  3. Disable WEP on your router.

  4. Update your PS3 firmware to the latest version.

  5. Use a wired network connection.

SOURCE: PS3 says DNS error (80710102) when i try to connect to the internet with a wired connection

try this
So what I found out was to put in the IP address you find in ipconfig/all but add one to the last octive. Example if yours is 172.16.1.25... then in your ps3 type in 172.16.1.26

Then I was using the primary and secondary DNS numbers that my computer was giving me in ipconfig/all. Do not use those. For your primary DNS number use the number for your default which should be a right below your subnet mask number. For the secondary DNS number just leave it blank. 0.0.0.0

Then you have to upgrade to version 1.50 (which just came out yesterday actually). Get a memory stick with at least 100mb space on it. Make a new folder that is names PS3. Inside that folder make another new one that is called UPDATE. Both must be in capitol letters. Then go to PlayStation.com - PLAYSTATION®3 - Network - updates and click on "download now"... Then click save and save it to your memory stick in the UPDATE file, which should be in your PS3 file.

Then after all is done... plug that into your ps3 in one of the USB ports for the controllers. In the main screen go to SETTINGS and then go to SYSTEM UPDATE. Go to UPDATE VIA STORAGE MEDIA. PS3 will search for your media stick and it should say on the screen The latest update data was found... Version 1.50. Click OK and follow the rest of the instructions. After it is completely done... go back to the internet connection setup and go through all the menus to make sure all your numbers are the same as I stated above. Then at the end run the connection test. It should work!

Goto the command prompt bar in the start menu type ' cmd ' then click o.k . A black dos screen will appear type in ' ipconfig/all ' and it will the the two servers you need under dns servers but if your doing a wired connection to your ps3 then you need to manually configure your dns on the custom method of setting up your internet connection on your ps3 as if this is auto config that will give you a dns error. Hope that helps ,I can go into more detail and guide you through it if need to .

DNS error 80710102

I had this problem a while back, turned out it was a loose connection to my router. This is also displayed when the broadband connection is down. Normally if you give it a while it will work, if not try resetting your broadband and router by unplugging them from the mains for 5 mins.
