Playstation 3 won't play games, dvd's or blueray movies

Downloaded version 2.17 we were playing NFL 08 and it froze. Now the console won't play any ps3 games, DvD's or blueray movies anymore. If there is any fix to this problem let me know.

Playing movie, movie freezes half way through. Now PS3 won't recognize any DVD/Cd that is inserted. Reset the system, confirmed that I had the latest download, inserted two other movies to confirm my netflix disc was not the problem. Powered off and on and still no success.

  • Chappelle Apr 05, 2008

My PS3 will not read any games or movies or CD's, it doesnt even spin 2 read tha discs.

  • Anonymous Apr 05, 2008

Yep looks like Sony is going to have their hands full with this problem!! Console worked one minute then quit that game put in another and nothing. Won't play DVD's, BluRay Disc's or music CD's. The drive motor that spins the disc is not starting up.

  • PoorSad3ownr Apr 05, 2008

After downloading a couple demos I started having problems with my console. Now it rarely plays ps3 game. I can play the demos and old ps2 games but nothing new. This seems like a common problem. Maybe there is something encrypted in the downloads that affects the system? the game is vitually useless @ this point.

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2008

  • Anonymous Apr 06, 2008

I was playing COD4 yesterday morning after the "PS store update". I did everything the same like every other update that i have done since owning the PS. I started playing COD4 and about the 3rd or 4th game the system froze, it froze like i have never seen before. Ususally the screen will freeze and you can still hear the music or action in the background but the screen was frozen on your last action. This time the screen just went black and i couldn't turn the system off with the controller nor by touching the sensor in the front, i had to reach in the back of the PS and click on the manual off/on button. When i got the system back on the game icon was not listed as an option to play, i switched games to Assassin's Creed and the system was not able to read that game too. I tried Spiderman Blu-ray and another regular dvd and the system was not reading any disc's at all.

I waited after work to try messing with the system again hoping it would read the disc's so I can play, no such luck. I called Sony at the 1800# and they instructed me to do some kind of default reset while they were on the line, after all was said and done they were not able to fix nor figure out the problem over the phone. They said they will be sending me a prepaid postal box to mail back to them so they can either fix the problem or replace with a new one since i just bought this 40gb this past Christmas only 4 months ago!

I see I was not the only one with this problem!!!!!!!!!

  • Muttzilla Apr 16, 2008

was playing call of duty 4 and the game froze. now it wont recognize any games or cds.

  • Anonymous Apr 17, 2008

First tried the controller to see if it was dead so charged it for a couple hours, retried and it was still frozen would not read DVD,Playstation 3, or Blue Ray discs.

Turned system on and off with no luck.We than tried trouble shooting the tv to see if maybe that was the problem but it wasn't.

Ran through playstation3 settings, menu and it would not do anything.

    Same problem, need an answer.

  • matthew2199 Apr 18, 2008

I've got exactly the same problem with the ps3. New update just before playing on COD4. It went black, froze and I couldn't do anything with it. Now it doesn't recognise any disc I put in. Need an answer!!

  • Anonymous Apr 20, 2008

so i called the support they are denying this claim of firmware
problems don't know if this is because i am not under warranty or what
but they are still saying that i have to pay $149. what do i got to do
because like i said before i do not feel i have to pay 149 for their
mess up. and sorry to say that link that was posted for the manual
isn't working plus i wouldn't necessarily suggest anyone who would need
to follow a manual to open up their system especially under warranty
    cause that voids the warranty.

sorry i keep posting as clarification new to the site.

will play bluray movies but not games, games will begin to load then the console freezes and i have to unplug to get back to the xmb. this started after i updated to 2.30

  • s1Lv3r187 Apr 21, 2008

Same problem, reciently purchased ps3 recieved 3 days ago, new in box from ebay. was immediatly prompted to update to v2.3 and now can only play blue-ray videos and games. No dvds, ps2, ps1, or cd can be found by ps3 called sony they suggested restore default settings still no good, even did full format for 4 hours and still no help. very frustrated I called sony again, was told this time that since it was purchased from ebay I had no warranty and it would cost me 149.00 to ship back to get repaired. Are you kidding me 3 days old, automatic update from sony themselves, now being told more money. Just to fix their mistake. what an amazing service they provide. please help

  • Anonymous Apr 21, 2008

no way just happened to me too wont read my games

  • jedi-joe78 Apr 23, 2008

im on my second ps3 now due to this problem... and now its happened again... phoned sony and they are exchanging my 60gb in 2 days.. good eh...ps3 no.3 in 6 months... but what happens when warranty runs out?????

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2008

Same problem, though the PS3 stopped playing DVDs and Blu-ray discs (not sure about games, don't have any) a few days about, and the 2.3 update did not fix it.

Sony says that the original receipt is required for in-warranty service. This is unfortunate since you're asked to send this off to receive 5 free Blu-ray discs as part of a sales promotion from late 2007.

Currently I'm arguing with Sony about the fact that 40GB PS3 was only released in November 2007, so every 40GB model on the planet is still in warranty.

Yes, they're happy to repair it for $149, but this just seems wrong for the two reasons above.

  • nepalhati Apr 27, 2008

  • Anonymous May 02, 2008

Updated Playstation 3 and now it won't play games.

  • Anonymous May 02, 2008

I was connected to the Internet last night and whilst I was playing a game the console just froze for no apparent reason. I restarted the PS3 and all looked normal until I came to play any of the blue ray games none work. I have only had the PS3 for less than a month it was and I'am sure something to do with an automatic update. I still have the receipt and will try to take it back to the shop but will stay clear of any automatic updates in the future.... SONY you really need to fix this NOW!

  • Anonymous May 05, 2008

brought the PS3 Friday, set it up Saturday, won't read discs Monday.

  • unhappywps3 May 05, 2008

Mine has done the same thing just last night after a couple of hours of play on GTA 4 (40 gig unit purchased in Dec '07 @ Best Buy the firmware is ver. 2.3.)

At this point the only solution is----
Call Sony, 1-800-345-7669. Hit the # 1 on the phone three times, #0 and then #1 again to speak to a CS rep. They will first ask questions and then want to walk you through some steps, and after about 13 to 18 minutes of "no, it still does not read any kind of discs at all, they will send you a postage paid coffin to return it in. (Basically, the Blu-Ray drive is DOA.)

  • Anonymous May 08, 2008

I cant play any games anymore either

  • Anonymous May 10, 2008

Ok i have been doing a lot of reading on thr forums and just have not found anything that will fix my PS3. Here is what happened! I bought a 60gig PS3 12/06 and have had no problems with it untill i purchased GTA 4 the day it was released. I started the game and ran the 3 gig install. Once the install was finished the game started. I got to the first cut screen and the PS3 went black and froze. I first tried the power button with no luck. I had to shut the switch off in the back. At that point i turned the system back on and now i can not see any Blu-ray disc or DVD's. I can see audio disc though! When the game is inserted i get the loading symbol in the upper right of the TV and it spins for about 30 to 60 seconds and then stops. At no time before, after or during the loading symbol does it recgonize the disc. The game will not pop up on the XMB neither will the movies. At this point i have check on the forums and can not find a solution. I have downloaded the http://www.ps3repairsguide.com/ and other than cleaning of the blu-ray lazer i have not found a solution. I am out of warranty and Sony tells me to send it in with $170 dollars to have them send me a refurbished unit. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Please let me know i hate not being able to play any of my games. PS i can still play the games that are downloaded to the HDD. I have also tried restore system defaults. Would a format really help? Should i wait till the next update is available? Please help me!!!!!!

    Version: 2.30

I have had exactly the same problem with my PS3 just after purchasing and playing GTA 4 for a few days. The ps3 now no longer reads or accepts any disc whether its a dvd, blu ray or game. when i insert a disc nothing happens the console wont even recognise that a disc has been loaded. as i am now a month out of warranty i have tried to strip the console clean the lens and the internal features (as this worked for me previously when my ps2 had problems) but with no luck. i have no idea what to do as the best solution now. has anyone any ideas??

  • Anonymous May 16, 2008

same thing it just stoped playing any discs

  • jiggles44 May 18, 2008

I bought the new GTA4 the day that it came out and I believe got to play it a whole two days and then tried to play it after I had to download version 2.3 onto my ps3 and I've got nothing. There is no option to play the game that even comes up or for a blue ray disc. I deleted the hard drive and started over thinking it was a diffrent problem. I tried to reset the whole system and still got nothing. I am calling sony today to see what is going on and since It's not under warranty and reading every one elses posts it seems like Ill be paying 150 for something that is their fault. Im super angry about this and I feel like they are ripping us off. Who really keeps receipts and knows where they are at. I feel like this issue should go public because not only did this happen to one person it has happened to many and playstation isnt sending out any type of warning to not download these versions. So now a counsole that I had to pay 500.00 for is worth 0.00 Thanks Sony Youre A Real Pal!!

My PS3 started locking up on me and I had to turn it off then back on to get it to work. This started happening more and more frequently until it became a daily thing. After it became daily, a week later it would'nt read any games anymore, or dvd's, CD's, Blue Ray....nothing. What can be done?

  • Anonymous Jun 20, 2008

The only fix to this problem I found was to get in touch with sony and get them to swap it if under garentee, lucky for me mine was. If not you may have to spend a bit to fix it. But I haven't connected mine to the Internet since and it has been fine touch wood.

i left my PS3 on over night to let demos download (as i have in the past with no problems) woke up this morning, installed demos, played them, FINE, went to try and play COD5 but the cd icon was not there, thought a simple restart would help but NOTHING, restored my entire system and still NOTHING, will not read ANYTHING

very annoying and dissapointing including i have no warranty on this system however i do have my receipt.

  • Anonymous Nov 28, 2008

I have had my PS3 for a year and 20 days. I have the 60GB HDD. Everything worked fine up until a couple of days ago and no matter what disc that I put into it, the wave is up in the right hand corner but no loading of the disc. I called Sony and spoke to three different reps who all stated that even if it is a day after the warranty, they will charge the $149 to repair. I have my receipt and luckily, I purchased an extended warranty from the place I bought it. However, I have seen several posts stating that Sony would replace theirs even if they had opened it or was out of warranty, but I have not had any such luck. I am very disappointed in Sony, due to this clearly being a problem that they know about. I asked the reps if Sony ever planned to fix the issue for free due to it being such a widely known problem. All of them stated that Sony will only honor the warranty up til 1 year, not a day after. If someone else is getting theirs replaced by Sony for free after their warranty, I wish that they would share the reps name for the rest of us. Already called the company who I bought extended warranty through and the prepaid shipping label is on the way. At least I still have my X-Box 360.

  • RedHockey09 Dec 02, 2008

Was playing GTA and it froze. Thereafter no discs were being read. Filled out the online forms and have my original receipt, warranty still good until Feb 09. Waiting for the prepaid box to send back to Sony. WTF??? Seems like a large number of people have the same issue. Song needs to do a recall before people decide to pursue legal action...

  • twolfe13 Dec 11, 2008

My console freezes quite regularly although not often during game play. Usually while surfing the internet. Once I shut it off from the back and I go to play a game immediately afterword the game load will freeze up. This what has worked for me. I shut the console down for at least a half hour to an hour and it works when I go to play a game. I believe it is problem with overheating. I have purchased the $25 intercooler and that seems to help.
Here is another scenario that happens: If I leave the game running for a long period of time and then go to surf the internet it tends to work fine. If I went straight to the internet without running the game I would get a freeze within 10 minutes. So all I can offer is keep your console cool and try to shut down correctly from the menu. I also notice that the graphics in the menu bar turn a yellowish green when the console gets overheated.

And as far as the guy saying hold your finger 5 seconds, let go then 2 seconds, then it beeps twice, shuts down and then comes back up with options, well has anyone else been able to do that, or did his system come with a free blunt?

I AM SOOOOOOO ****%^ OFF!!!! I bought 2 PS3 systems, an 80 for my son and a 60 for my boyfriend. Neither of the systems had any problems until they played each other online with Call of Duty 5. Since then, my boyfriends' 60gb had to be reformatted and restored and it does work but it is slow and my son's 80gb does not work at all......it won't read bluray discs, cd's, games, etc. I have tried to format, restore, etc. and nothing is working. We have 3 error codes coming up....80010036 (corrupt data), 80029906, and 80010514 (on both PS3's). HELP!!!! We bought the 60 at a store and the warranty was up in December. They won't even look at it. The 80gb I got in April from someone on Ebay and it worked fine up until the Call of Duty 5 adventures!!!!!!! HELP

  • Anonymous Jan 20, 2009

Same thing just happen was online playing COD4 and blank screen and no more playing anything on the drive !!!

  • dusted_fader Jan 21, 2009

My ps3 froze during a blu-ray movie, so i ejected the dvd and tried loading another disc, INVALID DISC appeared on the screen, so I loaded in a game and it worked for like 1 minute then went blank for about 5 min and ejected the disc. I unplugged the console for 2 hours and plugged in back together, video game played, for about 30 min and then went to black again. The game did this on and off several times, now it won't play at all, I can still load system and log online, but drive is pretty much F#*ked. this sucks because my warranty just ran out less than a month ago. I'm without warranty and ps3 is not giving my want I want... I've invested so much with games and blu ray discs and I can't use either, this really sucks and now sony wants me to pay $149 to fix it, NOT FAIR! Something must come of this.

    THAN I SEE THIS ARTICLE!

I'm calling in tomorrow for sony to take care of this...

The next day i went 2 watch the other half and nothing hapenned i put in PS3/PS2 games and normal DVD but nothing happens but the playstation does know there is a disc in there because the blue light at the front comes on and it lets me eject disks aswell.

  • levesque15 Feb 13, 2009

My 40 GB has the same problem. First ever update applied with new game install. Game crashed after a few minutes. When I rebooted, I went to menu. As if disc is not in. Updated to 2.60. No change. Discs are not recognized - DVD, BD, or games. I find it hard to believe this is a coincidence. Sony broke something, and they're trying to either deny it, or make money from it. I emailed them 3 times. All I get is a form email with a link to their online service request - $149. They ****.

I PURCHASED RESIDENT EVIL 5 FOR MY PLAYSTATION 3 80GB . AND IT UPDATED MY SYSTEM TO THE MOST CURRENT VERSION . AFTER AN HOUR OF PLAYING , THE GAME FROZE. I REMOVED THE DISC , TURNED OFF THE GAME CONSOLE AND RESTARTED. NOW, IT WONT READ ANY GAMES OR DVD'S . IS SONY GOING TO COME UP WITH AN UPDATE TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM OR ARE THEY GOING TO FORCE US TO PAY THE $150.00 FOR SOMETHING THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR . ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I was playing Resident Evil 5 and the game froze. Now my PS3 will not play any form of disc.

All downloaded content still plays fine, just not discs!

Bloody annoying when you think how much you paid for a PS3!

  • techc2003 Apr 16, 2009

I loaded the new 2.52 ver. from Sony that was on the Resident Evil 5 game disc. I played for an hour. When I came back 20 minutes later my PS3 would not play any games,cd's or dvd's. I contacted Sony and since I am out of warranty they want me to send the system back and for $150 they will fix their mistake. What a joke. They have actually found a way to make money on their f-ups. I get the canned rsponse about it being their policy. And we are so sorry you feel that we don't care. BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH. Fix your screw up for free. SHAME ON SONY!!!!!

  • Anonymous Apr 17, 2009

Sending it in to Sony is throwing away good money. I have read about others that have sent in their unit, paid the $150, and it failed again a couple weeks or months later. How many times should we pay $150 before they send us a system where we don't have to hold our breath every time we turn it on?

Sony already has the $400 I paid for the box as well as another $1000 in games but they want another $150 every couple of months so they can replace the laser? Just how stupid do they think we are? If I thought this was something I did that caused the system to fail I would not be so annoyed but the more I read about the PS3 on this site and others the more it looks like Sony put out a steaming pile of turds and they are tryng to pretend like it is our fault. Boy were we stupid. We trusted Sony to put out a quality product and stand behind it. As Chris Farley used to say, "Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!"

One other thing, apparently the "Blue Ray" technology Sony is using is not actual Blue Ray technology and their getting sued for violation of copy right. If Sony is using some kind of workaround to read Blue Ray discs or a sub standard Blue Ray tech it could explain why they're having so much trouble.

I'm not giving Sony a dime to fix this thing. They already have enough of my money. So I'm going to shelve it and wait. Sony just settled a PS2 class action for more than 8 million and the problems with the PS2 were nowhere near as common or annoying. Eventually some enterprising lawyer with a gaming fetish is going to buy a PS3, get screwed, and organize a PS3 class action. Why pay $150 now when I can send it in for free later?

If this is how Sony wants to handle the situation that's fine with me. I have to buy 2 new TV's due to the change from analog to digital, I'm going to need a new lap top fairly soon, and I need to buy a Blue Ray DVD player at some point. I also have Birthday and Christmas presents to buy. Wanna bet nothing in my shopping cart is going to have the word "Sony" on it. ;-)

  • hanger1957 Apr 20, 2009

I am not sure if what I am experiencing is the same but the game loads and plays but it will get stuck/freeze on a screen somewhere in the game.. then when I turn it the game is not there. So I will eject the disc and then put it back in and it will load maybe play a round of Multi-player Call of Duty then when I try to go to the Main Menu it will get stuck again.... if this isn't the same and you have a solution please point me in the right direction. THANKS

Same problem... system less than 2 years old, not abused, well taken care of... just one day movie freezes. Now will only play regular DVDs.

Ridiculous. $500.00 for 17 months of play. So now we're supposed to spend another $150.00 plus tax. Not to mention the cost of Blu ray movies we've begun collecting, as well as ps3 overpriced games.

I have the same problem. Blueray won't recognize ANY format of media, DC/DVD/BlueRay/Game. 40gig, manufactured in September 2007 (Many of these have died). Sony says "Bend Over Please". My son is disabled and this is his largest form of entertainment and I don't have $168 to give to Sony after the original $400 and all of the $60 games etc. I wish we could fight Sony on this one. I saw on another site where 2 people actually said Sony replaced their unit OUT OF WARRANTY, no costs or questions, but I have yet to find ANY customer service rep. at Sony whom was even polite to me, much less offering any solution other than "Show us the Money". I will personally NEVER buy another Sony product, TV, Blueray etc. If Blueray becomes the only media, I will stop renting movies. I hope their quarter earnings continue to drop and their stock drops to .01 cents.

  • Barry1469 May 22, 2009

I had the same problem while my ps3 was under warranty. I sent it in and got it back in 7 days, which is pretty good. But guess what happened, yep you guessed it, it broke 4 months after i got it back with the same problem. I called sony support and they said it will be $150, which i can't afford. I had problems getting the 1.04 version for COD 5, wouldn't install. I reformatted my hdd for ps3 use only and now it works, which might be from the ps3 update, but not sure. Still waiting to see if my games will read after the format. In progress as we speak. Patch now installing lets hope it reads the game. And it works!!!! Just try reformatting your hdd and see what that does. Good Luck!

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

so i called the support they are denying this claim of firmware problems don't know if this is because i am not under warranty or what but they are still saying that i have to pay $149. what do i got to do because like i said before i do not feel i have to pay 149 for their mess up. and sorry to say that link that was posted for the manual isn't working plus i wouldn't necessarily suggest anyone who would need to follow a manual to open up their system especially under warranty cause that voids the warranty

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

what is going to happen if people like myself isn't under warranty and have this issue what am i to do i gotta be charged for their mess up. i don't feel that it would be right to force me to pay for something the made my system fry.

This has happen to me!! and i end up buying another ps3 and it end up the same!!! i fix both of them!!! and about over 200 consols with the same problem!!! this is what u do! you connect your control direct to your ps3. and then you hold the power button for 5 seconds!! the system will turn on!!!remove your finger for a second and hold the power button till you hear 2beeps then remove your finger and the system will shut off!! this is a manuel reset!!! the system will turn back on!! asking u to connect your controller!! you already have it connected. then it will give you about 6 options!! you will choose RESTORE FILES!!! your system will check for your system defaults!! then it will tell you that you have corrupted files!! and proceed with it!!! it will fix if you have problems with your controls,if it doesnt play games, blue ray,if it freeze, system shutting off, icon problems, only playing sertting games or movies!!! if you have problems or any question feel free to ask!! i know is fustrating!!!

My friend has just had the same problem with the latest update version 2.3. There is a problem with this firmware, where the Blu Ray chip is allowed to run faster than it can cope with and basically cooks. Phone Sony if your PS3 fails to recognise any disc or flat-packs after this update. They are sending new consoles out to those who have this issue, on an exchange basis. Even 60GB are being replaced. Some of us have been lucky and not had a problem (yet). This is a firmware update problem, not a console glitch. If in doubt, phone Sony!

My PS3 recently stopped playing all games and DVD,s.I had previosly experienced the same problem when under warranty so sent it back to sony for repair. When the problem reoccurred i assumed that it was a problem with the laser. As it was no longer under warranty and not wanting to give sony any more of my hard earned cash, i decided to repair it myself by replacing the laser.
Unfortunatly having replaced the laser, the problem remained, the drive refused to read the disk.
Having read thru the posts with similar issues, i realised that i may have a software problem rather than a hardware problem.
What worked in my case was to do a quick format of the PS3 hard drive, using the system menu. This will restore the software to its original state without all the software updates and takes only a few minutes and your game saves can be easily backed up to SD card.
My PS3 now works fine. I dont anticipate that this solution will work for everyone with the same problem but its worth considering especially if your looking at a cash outlay to sony or 3rd party repairers.

THIS IS WHAT YOU DO....

I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure I am not the only one who is beside themselves with frustration because of this problem that SONY refuses to acknowledge fault for and wants to charge us a minimum of $150 bucks to fix..

  • THIS IS UNETHICAL, UNFAIR AND JUST PLAIN WRONG!!
I am considering filing suit against SONY however believe a class action suit would be more effective. Most of us just recently paid anywhere from $400.00 - $600.00+ for our new PS3 system and should be entitled to a properly working game system... Not a lemon for SONY to juice us with!

I appreciate any advice, input and/or support you might offer me/us in this matter.. If you feel the same way, please contact me at [email protected] to discuss this possibility..

Thanks,
-Katzmarbles

I have the same problem. My PS3 stopped reading any bluray discs. The spinning circle in the top right corner will come on for a few seconds when a disc is inserted, but then nothing. I found a work-around to get it to read discs though. You have to have a bluray disc in the drive (game or movie) and start a downloaded game or Playstation Home. Once the game or Home loads, hit the PS button on the controller. The crossbar menu will pull up and you will notice the disc icon will (magically) pop up. Click the quit game icon. Once you are out of the downloaded game or Home the disc icon will still be there. You can then load the game or disc. The icon will remain there until you eject the disc, so you will have to repeat this every time you want to load a game. Although this is a workaround to prevent Sony from gouging you for $150+, this is still not a fix. A fix would be for Sony to admit they have a money making firmware problem and fix it. This fix will only work if you don't have an actual hardware failure (which I apparently don't). I think a class action lawsuit is in order for everyone that has this problem and especially for those who have shelled out the money to fix something that is firmware related. I'm sure Sony will only fix the firmware to make this workaround not work anymore so as not to lose their little cash flow scheme.

I read ths form KcViper and it is the solution without paying money out of your pocket, you can actually call sony give them the problem and when they tell you the system is bad tell them that you have a solution and that is their firmware that is messed up, here is the post from KcViper and thank you my man.

The only way to solve this problem is to go after sony where it hurts, their pockets. Call customer support and take up as much of Sony's time as you can, be inventive and have fun with it but be nice.the operators are being paid. Try to eat up as much time as you can at least until you feel that they have not profited from your purchase.Get some friends have a few drinks put it on speaker.Sony should have had a recall. Call any and all Sony numbers you can find related or not shut down their useless customer service force everyone who deals with sony to say something .Please pass on this message. Let sony know what happens to companies who make crappy products and rip people off.PMF

The Blu Ray Diode fried when you shut the power switch on in the back. The PS3 uses 2 different lasers to read disks. One for standard dvd's and cd's and one for Blu Ray. The only way to fix your PS3 is to replace the Blue Ray Diode or laser lens. I would recommend paying the $150 bucks to have sony replace unless you know something about Diodes and lasers.

If you hold down the eject button for 10 seconds it will reset your laser and then you should be able to shut the power down in back safetly.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2008

I was playing GTA 4 when the same thing happened to me. And in a fit of rage I turned the power switch off in back which fried my diode. I sent it back to sony to get it fixed.

  • Anonymous May 11, 2008

Formatting and or resetting the hard drive won't do a thing if your diode is fried.

Ok guys, Well i have some bad new. I have tried everything given to me by you guys and nothing has worked. I finally broke down and called Sony one last time. After talking with the tech i have decided to send my Playstation in for repair. I do believe that this is my only option. I have paid with tax $168 to have them ship me a box so i can send it in for repair. The guy i spoke with said it might have been a broken blu-ray drive. I hate the fact that it was out of warranty but, at this point it the $168 is better than a broken $600 paperweight. Thanks for all your help guys, If i can give anybody any suggestion. DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR PS3 WHILE YOU HAVE A GAME IN THE DRIVE! At least Eject it before switching the back switch.

Ok so here is a recap of the things i have tried.

1: Inserting and Ejecting the disc multiple times
2: Restoring Default Settings
3: Holding Eject button for 10 sec. to reset laser.
4: Downloaded current update
5: Tried finding Ver 2.17 but couldn't
6: Delete newly loaded data IE GTA4 hard disk install.
7: Through PS3 on ground to jog the laser loose.... JK trying to see who was paying attention.

Well everyone I hope your PS3 is under warranty if this happens to you.

Read my post from the May 27th, Try all that stuff. If that still doesnt allow it to read blu-ray call Sony and send it in. If its under warranty then you wont have to pay anything. If its over a year old it will cost about $169 total. I just got my box on Friday. I will be sending it back out on Monday i will try to keep you guys posted on the wait time.

So You buy a PS3 at Sams Club or Walmart and switch the unit with the one in the box...make sure you swap the serial numbers and close it up to new looking condition. I figure you not doing anythin wrong since they built a $400 system that is faulty!!!!!

I had a problem with my sons ps3 not reading games. I looked all over Google and I found this place in Rockford Illinois that said they could fix it. Their website is Rockfordpc.com. I sent it to them and they fixed it and sent it back to me for $120. Evidently the laser went bad. All their ps3 repairs are $99 except for the lasers. I would give them a try, I liked them.

The only thing that sony recomend to do when your ps3 froze is to restart the system, hold the turn off button on your ps3 not he controller for 10 seconds.but i've never try this to seeo f this really work because i have no problems with my ps3.
p.s. the solution i read on http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/PS3 ijust forgot on which section i read it.

Don't have a solution, but a class action lawsuit is the right idea, for any company that is getting over on the consumer. Everybody, should take their claims to the better business bureau, or jusk tell Jan on fox news to get the word out on Sony's money getting scam.

Had exact same problem ,solved five minutes ago thanks to pcscm1 solution number 11.
Had visions of forking out hundreds of euro to sony ,broke into cold sweat.
Thought i'd check this site before ringing sony.
pcscm1 was right,it was a software problem,not a hardware.
In my case i just backed up game saves ,did a quick format and my ps3 was repaired!!!

You can fix this all you need to do is readjust the laser and to do this you need a good guide that will show you how.

Or of course you can send it in for repair.

A big THANK YOU to Rmchingon for the tip on how to fix the the PS3 not reading any disks. I had the same problem and followed the advise, all working now and my 60GB PS3 has started reading PS2 games again, which hasn't worked for ages. Basically this is what I did.

Connected up a controller via usb lead

Put PS3 into standby (red light) then kept my finger on the power button

Everytime it switched off i hit to power button again and kept my finger on it until I sore the restore menu.

Pressed ok to the corrupt data warning

Selected Restore system files

Pressed ok again

Switched power on again and all was well, it had retained all saved games and settings.

Hey I fixed my problem I have a 20GB ps3 updated hard drive and I think I caused the disk read problem but I don't know I was out of warranty and the 150$ deal to fix was not my cup of tea since I bought this and max price back in the day....Anyway its your disk reading lens it is either dirty or shot so you need to take apart your PS3 and get to the lens try cleaning it SOFTLY like with a q-tip with lens cleaner (put it on q tip not the lens) and just plug the disk drive in and see if it works if not get a new one they are on Ebay for like 50-70 bucks I got mine for 55 (make sure it has a warranty) test it out and that should fix it and oh if you left a disk in there like I did -.- you need to move the arms back in the disk drive but there are great videos on youtube so look them up there it takes like 15mins to do it GOOD LUCK!

The only way to fix your ps3 is too send it back to sony and have them put a new blue ray laser in it..mine broke after only about 10 uses..i had it for about a year and a half..they wanted $150 to repair it cause it wasnt under warranty..i told them it was their bad they said we dont care..i forged the reciept and made it look as thou it was brand new..death to the ps3..sony knows they have a bad problem on their hands cause i know the v.p of sony but because theve sold so many units they will not recall the units..good luck with customer service they will just hang up on you..best to but a xbox and say f-u to sony..which is sad cause everything i own is sony and i will never purchase another sony product again..there $150 mistake cost them 20 grand in future purchases.. "the dizzle..."

If you have an HDMI hookup and let the PS3 automatically choose your HDMI settings, that can cause a variety of problems playing discs. Try your PS3 with a component video connection instead -- or try this solution to get HDMI working right: 1. Reset video settings as per Sony's directions: http:/bit.ly/7FxoTE 2. When prompted, choose to have HDMI set up as your output -- but answer "NO" to the question that asks something like, "Do you want the system to automatically choose the optimal video output settings".
That solved the problem for us. How we got there:
Our new PS3 recognized games and discs but wouldn't play them - games just did nothing, a dvd gave us the message it was PAL (when it was NTSC). At first we thought we had a PS3 with a bad drive but when we had the same problem with our replacement unit we realized it had to be our setup.
We disconnected HDMI and setup with component video, following Sony's instructions on how to reset video settings (http://bit.ly/7FoTE) and it worked! So then we knew it was the HDMI settings. We reconnected HDMI following the instructions on how to reset video settings. Then on setup we chose NOT to automatically set optimal output settings. Problem solved.

We had the same problem with the update to 2.30... it froze on the "Press the PS button on your wireless controller" screen. We tried all of our controllers... nothing. Tried turning it on and off... nothing.
Then we tried plugging in the wireless controller. That worked. It looks like maybe it's disabling the bluetooth during the install. So before you send it in to be repaired, try plugging in the controller first.

Check the 24 Hz setting in the BD/Blu-ray setting area. Some televisions do not support this option. Turn it off. It will prevent blu-ray movies from playing.

To all,

The only way you can solve this problem is to get Sony to replace your PS3 console for you.

Lucky for me I was under garentee as I had only had it for a matter of weeks, what a pain in the neck it was and hastle sorting out there mess you think Sony would have more sence, than to release updates without testing them first...

If you are not undergarentee then you will have to pay, which I am sure someone has mentioned, but I agree Sony should cover the cost for there mistake. I'am sure if you argue the point they will show them the comments on this page and how many there are...

Hope this helps, and hopefully happy gaming.

Your blueray system is messed up that's why you can't play the movies and all ps3 games are blueray so that falls under the same category

I have had the same issue. Upgraded the firmware to 2.3. I have played COD4, Assasins Creed before but it happened whilst playing Colin McRae DIRT. The game froze. I tried to power down...no luck so switched off from the back. After this, DVDs and PS3 games no longer read. Was asked by sony Customer support to send them the console free of charge to be refurbished/exchanged. Told it would take 15-20 working days. So I will send in soon.

Turning the system upside down worked for me... temporarily that is. It wont load anything now, but it bought me a couple months. Playstation 1's and 2's had disc read errors that doing this solved, so I figured I'd try it with the 3, and it did make the disc load, but now its not wanting to work at all. Like i said... doing this might buy you a couple months...

Sounds crazy but i sytem restored held buttons down, surfed the web to trouble shoot and laughed at one person who suggested hitting the top of the ps3 to shuffle the player and guess what it worked .... i spent 4-8 hours trying to fix and all it took was a couple light taps to the top(like you would a babys bottom just slighly harder and presto.....

Needless to say, one of the possabilities are your blueray disk drive is no longer reading disks. I had to send my system in for an (Out of warenty) repair. It cost me exactly $105.00 for the repair, and free shipping. When it was returned to me, I got a new warrenty for 1 year. They had replaced everything inside the system and was like new. If you still have time on your warranty, then the repair is free. It will cost you nothing.

I poured a small amount of alcohol on the disc and wipe it around with a paper towel and load the disc while it was still wet and this work for me.Hope this works for you.

Y CANT PPL PLAY PS3

A

I'm in the same boat here... my 80g decided it wasn't going to recognize discs anymore. By the way, it is not just a direct result of that 2.30 firmware update, because mine is still 2.17.

I received mine as a christmas present a couple of months ago from my grandfather who has since passed away. No receipt, so not only do I have to pay $150, but I will no longer have the factory warranty!

All because of their defective hardware! This is robbery. I should not have these problems with a brand new $500 video game system...

I had the same problem. I tried formatting and restting everything I then tried holding on the power button, no pressing and releasing ect just hold it on the PS3 will beep once then twice and switch off, then just switch it on as normal and all was reset and it recognised all types of disc again. Happy day!

Hi,

This is a very common problem with the PS3 and is caused by a problem with the laser on the Bluray drive which is malfunctioning and can no longer 'see' or read the game disk properly.

The PS3 uses a dual laser system. This consists of either a dual refractor type lens or two entirely seperate lenses depending on which pickup is fitted to your particular system. One laser is for reading ordinary DVD disks and PS2 disks and the other for Bluray and PS3 games.

The symptoms you describe are quite typical of a failure of one or both of these lasers.

For more information on how to resolve the problem please have a look at this FixYa Tip on the subject.

What happens you put a ps3 disc in the drive? Does it not register at all? Does it read BLUERAY movies because if so it should read games as well.

Ps3 plays DVD and Blueray just fine, but will not play game discs... can't seem to read them. discs are in perfect condition, tried several different discs, no luck.

Some time when that happens the system configuration is wrong reset the configuration to game play on. That should let you play Movies and game. But!, make sure you remove the disk.

My ps3 has a hard time reading ps3 games but doesnt have a problem reading anything else.

Have you tryed to play a BlueRay movie? PS3 games are stored on BlueRay so it might play DVD's and CD's, but the BlueRay's laser diode could be burning out.

Region codes

No, you can't change the region codes. If at all possible I would take it back to the store and slap the salesperson!!!

Failing that, all games are not region coded, so you can play aus games on that machine. It seems the only thing it won't play is some blueray discs.
