One day fax is working and the next day it quit. I have no dial tone when I try to dial out and incoming faxes are not answered. The line is working at the wall jack and I have swaped phone cable / line too. All I hear is a click when I press the hook button on the front panel. Also, all we can locate is the quick start guide and not a main users manual that probably has a troubleshooting guide for help.
Thanks
I have no dial tone on this machine when dialling out, so it dials the number and then the usual beep every 5 seconds until it gives up. There is no dialt tone nor any phone ringing on the other end. Cable used is not defective as works perfectly with my telephone.

I have the same problem. One day I was sending and receiving faxes, the next, nothing. No dial tone out and other's faxing in cannot connect to mine. I took off the phone cord and plugged it into a regular phone and can make and receive calls. I have the same problem. One day I was sending and receiving faxes, the next, nothing. I have problem with my MFP 1522nf Printer I cant recieve fax on incomming call it is quite dead while It is set in automatillay answer mode when I dial it dial and gives tone but while in comming call no rings no reply ring answer mode is 1 but quite I checked every way settings wires but cant understand can any one know about this and help me.
Take your incoming phone line and plug it into the place that says "line" on your fax machine. Plug another phone cord into where it says "phone" and connect this to your telephone. Test to make sure you have chosen the right places by dialing a phone number to fax to and listen for the dial tone. If you get a dial tone, then you have set it up correctly.
On the fax machine look for the button that says "menu". Push it and use the up and down arrows to navigate the options on the display. Look for fax set up and press "ok" or "enter" on the fax machines keyboard to access this area. Look for "number of rings" and change the fax machine to a number of rings that is less then your voice mail box if you have one. Then close and save your choices.
Have someone send a test fax by dialing your phone number for the line connected to the machine. The fax machine will pick up on the number of rings set and automatically begin receiving and printing a copy of your incoming fax.
You cannot use magic jack.
You can also choose to manually answer an incoming fax if you see that your display on the fax machine says "ringing" or incoming" you can push the "start" button and this will start receiving your incoming fax.
Unplug the fax cable from the printer and plug the cable into a telephone. Do you get a dial tone? If no, call the phone company after you try a different cable. If yes, plug the wire back into the fax and call that number from a cell phone. If it rings and you get a msg on the printer console saying "incoming fax" , hang up and fax again. Did it ever work?
The answer mode determines whether the HP Fax answers incoming calls or not.
Different answer modes are :
* Fax
The HP Fax will automatically answer all incoming calls using the Rings to Answer setting. This is the default setting.
* FaxTel (unit with handset model only)
The HP Fax automatically answers all incoming calls using the Rings to Answer setting. If the call is a fax call, the HP Fax will receive the fax. If the call is a voice call, the HP Fax will create a special ring to indicate it is a voice call. The incoming voice call will need to be answered using the attached handset.
NOTE: If the HP Fax determines the call is a voice call, only the HP Fax will ring with the special ring tone. The other phones on the same phone line will not ring at all. You will not be able to pick up the voice call using the other phones.
* Tel
The HP Fax will not automatically answer calls. Faxes will need to be received manually.
* AnswerMachine
The HP Fax will monitor the line when an incoming call is answered by a person or by the answering machine. If the HP Fax detects fax tones on the line, it will receive the fax.
