The cartridge chip at least needs to be reset. But it may be that the printer is set so that it won't even recognise the cartridge if you manage to do this. Buy an Epson.

1st thing to ask is are they genuine cartridges, as they wont work if they are compatible. type or refills. This problem is common in this brand of printer.
My Epson R285 will not recognise compatible cartridges,mainly the black.I ran out of black ink and installed a compatible cartridge but it did not recognise it.To get the printer running I had to buy a genuine one which worked.I then ran out of all the other colours soon after and installed compatible ones which were accepted.I have now ran out of the black again but the printer will not accept the compatible cartridge.How can I solve this problem as the printer has accepted black compatibles before. most common, is there is a tiny piece of lint or paper shred, has worked its way between the ink cartridge and the print carrieage connectors,
take the cartridges out and wipe down the connectors on the cartridge and carriage with a lint free cloth or lens brush
Isopropyl alcohol is a good residue free cleaning fluid,
if no all the connectors answer, the printer assumes a wrong cartridge
Leaving the cartridge out for an extended period is never a good idea, but it shouldn't be fatal. Make sure you put the photo cartridge in the black slot - not the color one. If the problem persists, you might want to reload the driver for that printer from the www.lexmark.com website.
