Try to wipe the scanner glass clean with a soft lint free cloth.
If the "thick black line" also appears when making a copy, then there's something wrong with the scanner hardware. If this is the case, I highly recommend you to contact Lexmark Technical Support for additional assistance.

How to get rid of a thick black line on all scanned documents?

Normally when you see a line on your scanner all you have to do is clean the scanning lens. Its really easy to clean and make sure you do not use anything that is abrasive. Only use a damp non abrasive cloth.

Black line through the middle of the document

The thick line is either because of dust sticking to the glass or a module problem. Try different brightness settings and scan white paper. If the thickness varies and also the sides of the black strip are jaggered (step like) then it is dust on Glass. use isopropyl alcohol to clean, dont use solvents. If the teickness is same for all levels of brightness and has a sharp edge always, it could be scan module problem.

Thick line when sending a fax

Open the document feeder, there should be a narrow, long scan glass underneath. Clean that glass. Sometimes whiteout (liquid paper) or other foriegn matter will stick to the scan glass causing a "shadow" (line) on faxes being sent out. Hope this helps.

Thick Black line

This issue occurs if the scanner lamp is not getting enough voltage.
make sure that the printer isn't connected to a surge protector,
also you may try making a copy of any document.
this will be a hardware test, a reset of the printer might resolve the concern.
since the reset requires technical supervision,

revert back for further clarifications.
