I just fixed mine by rubbing off some debris stuck to the scanning glass. It was making a perfect black line down the right side of the paper when fed through the top feeder/scanner, but not when placed on the glass itself. (Maybe liquid paper or something got smudged on it, don't know). I just ever so lightly used my finger tip to rub it off and now it's scanning/copying fine! The scaner glass is the small section of glass all the way to the left when your cover is open.
There is a tiny spec on the scanner glass. Cleaning it will make the line go away.
The adf uses a different scanner glass. It is a tiny pice of glass next to the flatbed. Thats the one that should be cleaned. If you lift up on the adf you will see it.
Why didn't the technician fix the problem in the first. I wouldn't leave a customers office without fixing the problem.
If the technician knows what the problem is, they should be back out there to fix it.
For a 1/4" gap and it scans fine on the glass there has to be something going on with the optics.
It will have to take a technician to fix that one.

This article provides the self-diagnostic
steps necessary to evaluate top-to-bottom streaks that appear when
copying or scanning.
Important! This is seldom a scanner hardware failure.
The main reason for this anomaly is debris or marks on the scanner glass that is used for Auto document feeder (ADF) page scans.

It's not on the Flatbed, and the machine has been fully cleaned
I have two identical machines with this identical problem, the black line is exactly the same, the engineer who cleaned it said it possibly needed some settings changed.
All other functions of machine are ok.
He left it as he thought it was a scanning setting that can be changed
