Sounds to me like the toner - that is the toner cartridge has the wrong toner in it. The drum should be OK - clean it up first and then use a genuine toner cartridge OR you can buy our refill kit on eBay - search for Brother HL2040 - michellem6123

You problem is actually in the pick-up roller and separation pad areas. the paper is delaying and not making it through to the next check point in the machine fast enough.

Take it by your closest Brother Service Outlet. They're in the phonebook under "Computer Service & Repair". It's a cheap fix but requires parts.

Use good paper. Paying a little more for paper will save you a lot over time in repairs and premature toner and drum failures. Brother printers are really finicky about paper quality. Recommend "HP Office" brand paper as a minimum. It's a known good paper for general everyday printing and won't break the bank.

We were having a lot of print quality problems, similar to what you describe. We replaced the drum and it worked fine.

To get every bit of toner powder out of the cartridge, first remove the toner unit from the drum assembly. Second, find the little circular window on the right-side of the toner cartridge. Third, place a piece of black electrical tape over the clear window, cannot be clear tape. Fourth, re-install the toner cartridge into the drum assembly. Last, put the complete unit back into your printer. This worked for me.
