Lexmark X4580 cannot scan, as although it recognises my PC and when I press the tick it states "downloading application list it thinks for ages and then states "unable to retrieve application list"... I had it working once for just one day but it has never worked since... wireless printing is fine, As is photcopying. I have tried removing the drivers and reinstalling them via the supplied windows disc but to no avail. if I am linked via a usb the best it can do is a preview scan which works but it doesn't save the scanned pictures anywhere.....Please help...Mum died Saturday... tring to scan old photos for a memorial at the funeral...

This appears to be a known error on this model of Lexmark including all the 3500-4500 ranges... there are a couple of download patches on the Lexmark customer support site at lexmark.co.uk, I simply followed the instructions and the first patch worked fine......

    none of the downloads or suggestions on any of the web sites helped get scanner working with Windows 7. did get one message about a 2.0 link software needed but Windows 7 uses a 3.x version and is not compatible with 2.0

My Printer Lexmark X4580 will not scan. I get the following message-Cannot retrieve Application List. Printing and copying works fine.

A quick fix for most communication errors can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC. If your printer is connected via the USB cable, disconnect your printer from your computer. Reboot your computer. Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer. Try to scan again.
If that doesn't help, try to reinstall the printer software on your computer. This will help repair any corrupted files necessary for scanning or printing.

Lexmark X4580 (all in one wireless)

HI,

You can try out these two options one by one to fix it up:

A)
1 Unplug the printer.
2. Uninstall the drivers.
3. Reboot the machine.
4. Go to the lexmark site and download the drivers.
5. Install the new drivers.

B)You will get the "CANNOT RETRIEVE APPLICATION LIST" if your pc blocks the communication from the printer. This can be configured in your personal firewall. This can be Windows Firewall (found in Control Panel, Security Center), Symantec Client Firewall or similar. Depending on the configuration of this firewall you might or might not get pop-up messages from the firewall during installation. These pop-ups will allow you to permanently allow for this incoming communication. But your firewall might be set not to let you decide anything which will typically mean that the calls will be blocked out. This will often be the case if you have a company laptop configured by the company IT dept. You might then have to ask an admin to add exceptions the applications used by Lexmark as the configuration might not be open for you to change.

It says "downloading application list",

i had same issue,even after updating drivers from web site.

I solved it by downloading adobe reader,rebooting pc,then(and this is very important)unplugging the printer,AND the router for about 1min.

When i started the scan again,i selected the "scan to adobe reader"option.It all works fine,im thinking of leaving the printer unplugged from the mains till i use it,and the wireless router of course.I have a lexmark all in one x4690.

Printer has stopped scanning, error message cannot download application data

Mine does this too.
When the error comes up press the red X cancel button then select the computer name again and press the tick button it should then find the application list ok.

Unable to scan, X4580 printer is saying it can't find the application!!

It's looking on your computer for the scanning software, It won't scan unless the scan software is running so that it knows how to scan and where to send the scanned image.

Lexmark X4580 won't scan

I am not sure if this will work for you but I had the same problem with my x4580. I have XP Professional on a Dell Latitude Laptop. I had tried everything but alway could not find application list.

There are possibly a couple of things you can do. If you use Cisco VPN then go to options menu and if the stateful firewall is checked, drop on it to uncheck it.

The most surprising thing I found with it is that I went to try it again against the name of my laptop and it scanned to my husband's laptop. Surprised, I tried again, same result. I could only conclude that it was the name. Both computer names ended with PC.

Solution that worked for me.

Turned off my husband's laptop.

I went into the printer through the internet. Just put in the ipaddress of the printer, you can find it from using internet to log into your wireless router. then just put the number in your browser and it will link to it. Go to configuration, then click on scan to network hosts and delete both your name and any other that may conflict.

Call up the imaging studio and go to tools, printer status and maintenance, click on advanced and then and you will see a link at then networking, then you will see a link at the bottom to enable you to change your PC name which I suggest you do.

Then shut down your pc, turn off the printer and disconnect the power supply from the printer for at least 30 seconds, restart your router.

When all is done, turn everything back on and see if you can now scan.

Lexmark X4580 (all in one wireless)

resintall your driver or scanner/printer management suite. Drivers for these sort of all in ones, get corrupted by little things, like power glitches, all the time.
