I have a Zoom H4N and i am unable to select different modes on my recorder. There is actually no 'mode' available in my menu. How do i fix this? It is brand new out of the box.

open up the battery door. Make sure that the switch it is not set to "stamina mode". This disables many main menu options

I use an earlier model but try:

Press the "red" light on the correct channel you are using for input. that will bring up the dialog to set input level. the +/- level set is on the same side of the device as the menu wheel.
You need to be in 4CH mode for the external lights to be on

H4n menu button doesn't work

If the menu button on your Zoom H4n recorder is not selecting or responding when pressed, it could be due to a few different reasons:

The button is physically damaged or stuck: Check the button to make sure it is not stuck or physically damaged. Sometimes dirt or debris can accumulate around the button and prevent it from working properly.
The firmware needs to be updated: If the Zoom H4n recorder has not been updated recently, it's possible that the firmware needs to be updated. This can be done by connecting the recorder to a computer and downloading the latest firmware from the Zoom website.

There are certain modes that you simply can't get digital zoom in (such as widescreen mode). If that isn't the problem, perhaps it's not enabled. According to the manual which I believe is here: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0300001567/01/PSSX10IS_CUG_EN.pdf on page 54 of the manual (p56 of the PDF) it shows that the digital zoom can be enabled in the FUNC menu (in a record mode). The description of digital zoom, including the safety zone, which might explain why you can't get digital zoom under certain circumstances, is on page 68. Note that there's a big chart on page 286/287 that shows what features are available in each mode - I have a feeling that this could be your problem.

actually i want to ask u that when you are doing white balance is your camcorder in recording mode ?
if, yes then dear camcorder will not take white balance in recording mode .. make itin stand by mode and then do white balance by keeping a white paper in front of the camcorder at least two meter away ok.

If your H4n is in STAMINA mode (Switch in battery compartment) then MODE is not viewable in the MENU. Simply Turn off the STAMINA Switch and restart your H4n (Turn H4n OFF then ON again)

Does the unit came in with a manual to the H4? If not, Here's a link to the PDF manual online. Inside the manual, there is no general reset function (in the manual, that is). It would be advised to call Zoom (who are very easy to work with) and ask them if there is a factory reset procedure which is not in the manual. The manual for the H4 is very comprehensive, and there are default settings for many areas of the recorder. You could use this manual to reset your adjustments manually.

Hi. Based on the question you posted you have H4N. Anyways, based on the manual there is no genereal instructions there on how to reset the device. The only thing i can think of is to do software upgrade. Here's the link where you will download the software.

Hello,

Putting the H4N into four-track mode is as simple as clicking the menu button, scrolling to 'Mode' and clicking, then selecting '4CH' and clicking again.

So, if you don't find mode on your Zoom H4N, then maybe its a factory error from the manufactures of this unit.

Since its a brand new Zoom H4N, I would suggest you return it and replace it with another Zoom H4N. This time, open it in the store, click the menu, scroll to mode in order to confirm its not like the first one.
