My computer won`t recognise the zoom h4n it says the driver software didn`t install correctly I followed another column that said go to device manager click on universal bus and look for an ! mark -but there was none I restarted as suggested but still no go - I have tried the zoom both powered on and powered off into the computer- it it did work originally when I first got it but not now - I do know how to to access my files from the zoom so it appears to be a software problem - any help you could give would be greatly appreciated thanks! Hi you said the proper operating system for the zoom h4 is xp or vista and thats fine but if you read my message its the H4n that I own and that we are dealing with not the h4

Being that the h4 is older I`m not sure at this stage if your solution will work but will give it a try

but if you could perhaps forward your answer in the context of the h4n that would be much appreciated

    thanks

  • hillier_jero Jul 27, 2011

Yes and I should point out I am running Window 7 with the H4n

  • hillier_jero Jul 27, 2011

It worked before with Windows 7 but now for what ever reason it is not being recognised when I connect it to the computer

zooms website indicates that it can indeed be compatible with Windows 7 but because its not now being recognised by the computer I can properly follow through with there installation instuctions

Thanks for you help but still no further advanced

  • hillier_jero Jul 27, 2011

sorry that should have read "can`t " follow through with the instructions

  • hillier_jero Jul 28, 2011

Ok thank you did all that was suggested and H4N seemed happy when the process was successfullyz(previously there was an error) complete however the problem still arises when I connect the unit to the computer
if I go into my device manager it tells me I have an unknown device which is clearly the H4N as when I remove it it disappears
    Still no further advanced

  • hillier_jero Jul 28, 2011

Thanks for your assistance ,went through the process of of doing what you suggested 3 times and still the same problem remains - the computer won`t recognise the device

as I have stated previously if you look in device manager you can see "unknown device" which is clearly the H4N

with your instructions the zoom tried to install but it still comes up with "device driver software was not successfully installed"

It begins to install but then falls in a heap

    still no further advanced

Hi I have taken all the advice so far from each expert , in some cases I`ve performed the suggested advice up to 3 times and still the same problem persists
My computer does not recognise the zoom h4n ,if I look in device manager I can see it as an "unknown device" when I hook the h4n up it tries to install the software but then I get the message "your software might not have installed correctly"
Hoping I can get it working soon thanks

  • hillier_jero Jul 31, 2011

Thank you but I already tried this solution (3 times) only to no go and replied to it in similar format to below

the problem still remains that when connecting the H4n the software tries to install but keeps telling me "you`re software may not have installed correctly" if I look in my device manager I can see there is an unknown device there which is clearly the H4n as when I remove it , the unknown device disapears

I have been fussing with this problem for about 8 hours, trying various "hail marys" The latest was to go to the device manager, search around until I found the H4n, click on the tab that said "automatiically ubdate the driver" and within 30 seconds the icons appeared on the sound page of the control panel. No, I cannot explain it. But I thought I would let you folksknow incase it made adifference/

You should be able to plug in your Zoom H4n directly into the usb, and it should automatically come on. Then you need to push in the wheel to allow it to connct to storage. Then you should see the various folders where your recorded data resides. It is merely a memory disc like that in your camera. You should be able to copy or drag it to your hard drive.

Well, it's driving me nuts because I love the Zoom for the ability to do a quick recording. But getting at it afterwards....! I found the Zoom appeared as a USB device when I moved it around while connected to the computer, so I can only imagine there's something wrong with either my USB lead or the Zoom itself. Frustrating, though. Mine seems to work when it's upside-down!

The supported operating system for the Zoom Handy Recorder- H4 is Windows XP or Vista. If you are running Windows 7 then you are going to have to find a Windows 7 compatible driver. You can find the Windows XP/Vista driver here. Just follow the download instructions.

The H4 as well as the H4N are both only compatible with Windows XP/Vista. As this product was manufactured before the release of Windows 7 drivers for it don't come standard with the package. You said it worked before, with which operating system was that?

There is an article about the Zoom H4N's trouble with Windows 7 even after the WIndows 7 driver update. You can read it here: http://proaudiohelp.com/zoom-h4n-usb-int...

I now see what you mean. It's sort of a conundrum or paradox really, as in order to install the Windows 7 driver's the Zoom H4N has to be connected via USB and Windows 7 doesn't recognise it without the driver being installed :' However I have just found a solution.

It stated in the install instructions that you must copy the "SYSTEM.BIN" file into the root directory of the SD card. You can do this by using an SD card reader instead of the USB connection.

    Just follow the following:

    1) Download the driver here. Just download the Windows 7 driver according to your operating systems bit (32 or 64).

    2) Extract the downloaded file. Then, you'll find the "SYSTEM.BIN" file.
    3) Copy the "SYSTEM.BIN" file into the root directory of the SD card via a card reader.
    4) Remove the SD card from the SD card reader and insert it back into the H4n.

    5) Make sure the H4n is not in any way connected to your PC..
    6) Then turn on the H4n while holding down the [PLAY/PAUSE] key.
    7) Move the cursor to "OK" by using the [DIAL].
    8) Push the [DIAL] to start the system update..

Now, according to Zoom once the update is complete the H4n should be recognised by your Windows 7 system when you plug it in.

Let me know how it goes.

Hello.

I have to ask some questions because I can't view what other Fixya experts suggested. I can only view the replies you gave them.

Have you used the Zoom H4n with your Windows 7 computer before without any problems? Have you tried and downloaded the latest drivers from their website? If you haven't done it yet, here is the link:

Why my sony steadyshot camera dsc-w180 memory is not recognise to my laptop when inserted, but it support when i inserted to my camera, i want to transfer file to my laptop but no way please give me y

It is not only the card and computer or camera and computer that is needed. To interface anything to a computer you need a program. Most of the time called a driver. When you put a card reader to the computer, or when there is a card reader in the computer you need a driver that came with the card reader or the computer. To read from a camera, you need a driver that came with the camera. More and more, the interfacing of cameras becomes standard, so if you ever installed a camera driver it could be other cameras can communicate with your computer. But no guaranty it always work.
With the correct driver, your camera acts like an external memory to the computer and the computer can read the pictures on the memory card in the camera.
So if you use a card reader or a camera on the computer always meme sure you have installed the correct software that came with the apparatus.

I have a zoom h4n. I can't get anything but low record levels. I have tried manual and automatic level control. The manual says I should select auto rec and then select start lvl, but when I select auto...

I use an earlier model but try:

Press the "red" light on the correct channel you are using for input. that will bring up the dialog to set input level. the +/- level set is on the same side of the device as the menu wheel.
You need to be in 4CH mode for the external lights to be on

Hello I am trying to install CUBASE LE4 for usewith my Zoom H4n recorder but having diffultity getting the ZOOM H4 ASIO driver as mentioned in the setup guide. thanks pat

Hello Pat, you will probably have to download driver from the internet. I had a similar problem with another synthesizer software program. Even though the HD series Zooms come with cubase cds, they are not always compatible with the pcs. You should be ok after that.

I have a Zoom H4N and i am unable to select different modes on my recorder. There is actually no 'mode' available in my menu. How do i fix this? It is brand new out of the box.

If your H4n is in STAMINA mode (Switch in battery compartment) then MODE is not viewable in the MENU. Simply Turn off the STAMINA Switch and restart your H4n (Turn H4n OFF then ON again)

Hope that Helps

Sony K610i Will not sync with my computer

Please ensure that all drivers are installed. Check in device manager.
Right click on my computer and select properties. Then select the hardware tab and device manager in that section. If any drivers are not installed properly they will appear with a yellow exclamation mark. Reinstall these.

If all drivers are installed correctly check the contacts on the phone as sometimes the tend to get dirty and block the signal. also check if cable is faulty.

Not recognising my creative zen mp3 player...

i had the same problem but solved it, it seems that the usb driver does not always install with the software installation. so you must install using the DEVICE MANAGER make sure first your mp3 player is connected, so ( copy & paste) your software to desktop, then go to CONTROL PANEL, then SYSTEM, then HARDWARE then DEVICE MANAGER, in device manager you should see ( zen v plus ) with a yellow question mark above it, which means the drivers are missing, click onto that and follow instructions to install the drivers which you will find in the software you have pasted to desktop. good luck, tony spain
