Maytag Atlantis MAV7260B Top Load Washer Logo
Anonymous Posted on Nov 19, 2010

Maytag model. PAVT244AWW. The problem started when the washer tripped the breaker. I removed the belt and turned on the spin cycle and the motor seemed to run fine. I tilted the washer so i could spin the inner tub from the pulley. Turning counterclock wise the transmission locked onto the shaft and spun the inner tub freely. I also spun the pump pulley and found no restrictions. When I replace the belt, the motor bogs down and will turn the load. The washer was empty during this process. Please help. Thanks

When I said above, the motor bogs down and will turn the load. I was incorrect, the motor bogs down and will NOT turn the load and eventually trip the breaker.

The pump can sometimes bog the motor down in one direction and be fine in the other.

Check with the belt off that the bowl will turn freely, if not check drum bearings or something caught between inner & outer bowl. Make sure when you fit new belt it is adjusted to the right tension or it will slip & burn.

Take the belt off the transmission pulley and see if you can turn it by hand. It will agitate on direction and spin when you turn it the other direction.
Put the timer to spin with the belt off and see if the motor will run. There may be a problem in the start switch on the motor letting it start in one direction but not in the reverse direction.
Special tools are required to remove the transmission and brake assembelies. You also want to make sure there is nothing sticking through the holes in the basket causing it to lock up such as a nail or screw that may have been left in a pocket.
Post back with what you find.
Thanks/Mike

Washer spins but will not agitate

1) Verify a circuit breaker isn't tripped

2) Advance the timer control dial slowly 360 degrees-

If the washer starts spinning, then we know the motor and drive belt are fine but that there is something wrong with either the timer control dial or the agitator solenoid. Call in a professional for this.

If the washer doesn't budge, then verify that the drive belt(s) is attached and not broken by removing the back panel. If the belt is broken, replace it. If it is loose, then tighten it by loosening up the bolt holding the motor and moving it on its swingarm (much like a car alternator) until there is a 1/2 to 3/4 inch deflection in the belt.
Some washers use reversing motors. It's possible the motor works on the spin cycle but not on the wash cycle. If so, call a pro.

3) Visually inspect the lid safety switch- Is it loose or cracked? If so, the washer might work intermittently, stopping at different cycles.

4) Check motor and drive belt- Remove the main access panel (usually in the back). Is the motor spinning, but the drive belt isn't? If so, then you have a drive belt problem.

Agitator won't spin and water won't drain during spin cycle

Hi
Try these things first.

If none of these tips resolve the problem, then there's probably a more serious problem with either the motor, the transmission or the agitator itself. If this is is the case, call in a pro.

Check to see if it is a pump problem or a transmission problem. First remove both belts see if all the pullys turn freely. if the pump has a tight feel check inside pump for a item jammed in it.look for transmission oil on floor or belts if oil is present transmmision if probably going.ALSO check at the top of the tubs for anything stuk in between tubs.

MAYTAG TOP LOAD WASHER

you don't say which model you have. one version uses two belts accesible by just tipping the machine back. Another version you must remove the front panel, and drop the pump and you'll be able to replace the one belt.
