Light bulb I have a Kenmore side by side, do not know model number. Light bulb burned out, bought a new "appliance light bulb" put it in and it started smoking inside the light bulb and then burned out. Is there a specific bulb I should buy?

Open the oven door the model number should be on a label on the face of the oven or on the side of the door.

Your control panel has red lights on it. Sometimes they burn out and you can not read the numbers.

Find the model number and go into the following website. Record the control panel part number. Search the web for this part number.

I recently, purchased a remanufactured oven control board for $45.00, when Sears wanted $256.00.

Make sure you ground yourself before you touch the control board, by touching something metal. Static electricity will knock out a control board.

The door switch provides a source of power to two things. Yes the door switch can be bad. What is your model number? There was some models that left the lights on when the door was closed and people would unscrew the bulbs just to sell them to people unaware. That problem was related to a bad relay on the motherboard

I would say you have the incorrect bulbs in them.

The bulb is a special bulb, take the model and serial #s to your appliance parts store and they can get the correct replacement.

you just need a standard appliance bulb-usually 40 watts

is it in the freezer side or fridge?

you have corrosion in the socket which will cause the bulb to short out

If you have 120VAC on the center contact of the light socket, and a working fan, but the bulb won't light...the most likely cause would be a disconnected neutral wire (white) in the light wiring inside the hood....assuming everything else is wired correctly.

If you're comfortable with further electrical testing...let me know, and I can describe a detailed procedure to check the status of the neutral wire. Otherwise, you may need the assistance of someone familiar with electrical troubleshooting or appliance repair.

check to see if the light is turning off when you close the refrig door. its possible the door is out of adjustment and is not hitting the light switch properly when the door closes

there is a tab in the bottom of the light socket that can get bent so that it wont touch the base of the new bulb. unplug your refrig and use a small screw driver and bend the tab back out a little bit so that it will contact the new bulb...
