Big black box in the middle of the screen

This TV was my grandfather's and it was working fine when he first gave it to me. The remote is lost but it worked fine with the universal one. One day I accidentally brought up the menu and when I hit "exit" the data cleared, but the big black box remained on the screen. The sound is fine and if I change the channel the box will disappear for a second and then come back up. I tried unplugging it for an hour, a day, a week with no change. I have since left it unplugged and disconnected for several months. Yesterday I decided to try it once more before putting it out to the curb and the black box is still there. Anyone have any suggestions?

Last night suddenly I experinced some screen problem in my
TV. A big black box appeared and remained on the screen. The sound is fine and
if I change the channel the box will disappear for a second and then come back
up. One interesting thing, when I change the channels, I can view 3-4 local
channels without black box I tried unplugging it and connected again with
no change. When I try to watch VCR run, black box is still there but when I try
to watch DVD player connected with TV, the black box is not there.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

I got the black box off the screen without the original remote. I used the buttons on the tv, not the universal remote (that wouldn't do it) I got into the main menu and scrolled to the "channel summary." When I entered that, the box went away so all I had to do was adjust the volume to get rid of the data on the screen and the box didn't come back up! Now there's a little #3 in the upper right corner, but I'll take that over the big black box any day. Just changing the channels through the cable box doesn't do any damage either so I'm good to go now. Hope this helps anyone else having this problem.

I too received a free tv without the remote. I was playing with the menu to remove the 3 in the corner and now have locked the menu to where I can push the button and nothing happens, just the black box remains.

MY SON WAS MESSING WITH THE BUTTONS AND GOT A HUGE BLACK BOX STUCK ON THE SCREEN RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TV...IF YOU CHANGED THE STATION IT WOULD GO AWAY FOR A FEW SECONDS BUT WOULD ALWAYS RETURN...IN MY CASE IT WAS THE CLOSED CAPTION THAT WAS TURNED ON...EVEN THOUGH NO WORDS SHOWED UP ON THE SCREEN...WHEN I TURNED OFF THE CLOSED CAPTION IT WENT AWAY...I HOPE THAT THIS HELPS SOME ONE OUT WHO HAS THE SAME PROBLEM

The black box is there because your closed captioning is on and set to text mode. Some channels send the signal even when there is no actual text to display. You can get rid of it by either turning off closed captioning or changing it to CC1 or CC2 mode instead of text. If you can't find those settings, then restore factory settings as directed in your user manual.

Zenith TV has a big black box in the middle of the screen.

After reading other postings, we figured out that it was the caption box, went to menu and turned it off.
Thanks for the great site, we wouldn't have figured it out without it !

shut off close caption. use the CC button onthe remote or go in to the menu and change close caption to CC1. this box is the close caption in TEXT(1,2) which will put on a black box whenever there is caption present.
