Exact same thing happens to me. If I turn it on "Camera" mode the Canon logo comes up but will not go away. It will also not power down without removing the battery. In "Play" mode there are purple lines across the screen.

I too have a same problem on ELURA100. When i turn ON, i get a blue screen displaying CANON and freeze. It does'nt turn off even i turn the switch OFF unless i physically remove the battery. In play back mode, everything works fine. Canon workshop suggested to replace the lens kit costing 200$. I was almost thinking of dumping this camera until i saw this site...
I dont face this issue everytime, sometimes camera works fine....
I tried removing the outershell but not yet succeeded..fully...i will be trying out to look for the lens connector as suggested...I too have a same problem on ELURA100. First of all, English is not my natural language, so please forgive me. My canon elura 100, bought in the US 1 year ago, had the same problem. After a big fall (from a second floor), the camera landed in wet sand and after that the camera won't record again (it plays the recorded files just ok). Just today i had the time to check the camera, so i disassemble the camera and found a poorly connected cable, that goes from from the lens body to the motherboard of the camera. After reconnecting this cable the camera start recording again.
It took me a while to figure this one out but I finally did and mine is
back to working perfectly. The problem: The Play option worked fine but
the camera did not. When turned to camera mode the blue canon screen
would come up and then freeze. The only way to turn it off was to
remove the battery.
The fix: I was brave enough to take the
entire outer shell off the camera. On the main board, underneath the
screen/battery side, all the different parts are connected together.
There is a single connector from the lens that had come out of its
port. The ribbon connector must have somehow been shaken out of the
port at some point. With needle nose pliers I carefully fit the ribbon
connector back into the port. I carefully reattached the outer shell
and everything was back working!
I will warn you that this
task takes some time due to many many screws. It's a lot better than
sending it off for hundreds of dollars though.

well, first, u should check what format of the video file from your cannon. In my opinion, it may be mod format, and vista and lots of players will not support mod. u should try to convert mod to some regular format .
In some cases when recording on a camer the display is run through the eye piece on some models there are switches or settings in your menu .. you can try that
Hi,
I just posted that I had the same problem with the Elura 100 not taking the cassette, although the compartment will close without a cassette. And I did have the problem with the left wheel rewinding, then the beep occurs.
I was tinkering a bit. I decided to take some video on the SD card, and I let it record for a moment. After that, I went back to trying to get the cassette compartment closed, and it worked! Almost like the camera needed reset.
We'll see if it stays corrected!
Prior to that, I have tried using a can of air, loading a new cassette, etc. And I DEFINITELY did NOT have any condensation!
Hope that works for ya!
ok. what you need to do it hit the side where the tape goes in...start out slow and then gradually hit harder and harder...not too hard though...because it sounds like a hardware jam...you need to unjam it by shaking it up a bit.
I have the same problem. I have no fix in rec mode but if it happens during playback; press menu and select the zoom options. You don't have to pick any but just keep the menu displayed on the screen. I do this while recording the tape to my DVD recorder and it solves the locked zoom problem. The menu display does not get recorded.
This zoom problem is a big pain. We should start a class action suit against Canon. It started within a year of ownership with mine. I bought a Panasonic recently and haven't looked back.
Panasonic doesn't have the slick Canon marketing/packaging but it is a much better machine.
You may want to check the record lockout safety switch located on the tape. This button can get moved by accident and the camera will refuse to record on that tape. Also, be sure the camera is in "video" mode, not "photo" mode. Some of Canons camcorders have a digital still camera mode which stops the camcorder from functioning because the photos are being recorded to a memory card and not your tape, please check this swithc as well.
Good luck.
