Whacking the camcorder did fix this problem. Search posts in Elura 70.
I have the same problem. I have no fix in rec mode but if it happens during playback; press menu and select the zoom options. You don't have to pick any but just keep the menu displayed on the screen. I do this while recording the tape to my DVD recorder and it solves the locked zoom problem. The menu display does not get recorded.
This zoom problem is a big pain. We should start a class action suit against Canon. It started within a year of ownership with mine. I bought a Panasonic recently and haven't looked back.
Panasonic doesn't have the slick Canon marketing/packaging but it is a much better machine.

I have the same problem and do not have a solution. You would think that Canon would let all know what the problem is so that we can make an informed decision on whether to get it repaired or find another camera!
I am having the same problem with my Canon Elura 60. It started zooming by itself today. I can't stop it. Any suggestions are appreciated.
The school that I work at has two of these cameras. BOTH started the "autozoom" problem.
I would recommend against buying this camera.
Yup, Me too. Was going to pop up to the Canon repair shop, but was looking online to see if there was a simple fix. Will pass on the world wide frustration !
I bought Elura60 mid 2004 and worked normally for 3 years. Since last year, it came up the "zoom-by-its-own" problem. So far there is not solution to fix. Sometimes, it heals by its own. But most of times, It has zoom problem. I have to hold the zoom button all the time when I record.
It seems that all Elura family (60, 65, 70 and ...) has this problem.
Starting class action is one way to go if we can not find a good solution for this problem.
I have two 70s that I bought at the same time and within a week of each other started doing the "auto zoom".
I have the 70 model, how do you start a class action, what a piece of shight. I also owned a canon powershot, around the same time the zoom issue, the powershot decided to take pictures in only orange. Only solution, pay Canon another $100+. I'm sure it would be the same for the Elura 70. Built in breaks to keep you paying. All firmware/software issues worth $$.
How do we get these guys to fix their bugs without charging us? simple download off of the web I bet.
I have the same problem, Canon Elura 60 with "phantom zoom" - Contacted Canon, they said too bad.
Suffice it to say I won't buy Canon again.
