It's not the start button if it responds to the button. Make sure the motor spins freely. If so, make sure you have voltage going to the motor. If so, check the start capacitor (if equipped) Good luck.

I'm guessing that your belt my have been misaligned, which means, no problem!
But, I recently had a machine that had a motor that would not turn, only hummed. I vacuumed the lint, then blew the lint out of the motor with a compressor, and vacuumed again. It still needed a push start to get the motor turning, but it starts on its own, now. So, if you have a lot of lint buildup, it can eventually stop the motor
Sounds like a bad motor. Check to make sure the drum isn't stuck, if you can spin the drum put some tape on the door switch and press the start button while you spin the drum. If the drum continues to rotate, you have a bad motor.

Sure sounds like a winding problem. Initially when you press start and hear the dragging of the motor sound, this is the start winding going out. your problem is most likely an issue with the start button. if it is stuck, the dryer will keep running even though it has passed the off position. your start switch probably needs replaced. Joe
This sounds like the motor is siezed or burned out. I wish I knew how much a motor is, but the Neptune is a good dryer so it would probably be worth it to get a new motor if indeed that's the problem.
