Most likely cause is a thermal fuse or the heating element. And if it's a thermal fuse, you need to make sure the dryer vent is clear and un-restricted, since that is the most common cause of thermal fuses blowing.

SOURCE: Maytag Electric Dryer Stopped Working

Check spring tab behind door switch-if it's bent/out of adjustment, circuit will act like door is always open.

To confirm this, open door, set dryer to active setting, and hold in door switch; if it comes on, then it's either the spring tab, or the switch is malfunctioning

SOURCE: maytag dryer not heating up thus not drying clothes

This is usually a simple heating coil malfunction. The coil may have breaks in it causing it not to work. It could also have something to do with 1 of several heating sensors that may be broken, telling the dryer's heating coil that the dryer is too hot, in effect turning off the heating coil. If your dryer has a round lint filter in the rear of the drum, it was 1 of 2 models of Dependable care dryers produced in the 1970's. If this is the case, i supose it would be up to you whether you want to try and get it repaired or not. If you have one of the more recent models,,, the lint filter is directly behind the door, at the front of the drum. and in this case it would probably be a good idea to get it looked at it as Maytag is a relatively dependable brand.

SOURCE: No heat coming from dryer

Double check the circuit breaker for the dryer (Electric Neptune). Turn it off, then turn it back on. Its possible that the breaker may have tripped for some reason, but wasn't able to trip all the way.

Does the interior of the dryer get warm at all? You could have a 1 of multiple heating elements that has shorted. If no heat at all, the likely a heating element has opened up. Unplug dryer from wall (turn off circuit breaker first!). Use a ohm meter to measure and check continuity of the heating elements.

There may also be a sail switch in the air path of the dryer. The purpose of the sail switch is to keep the elements turned off until there is enough air blowing through the dryer. This helps prevent fires, as well as shrunken denim.

SOURCE: I have a maytag performa dryer wont heat up sometimes

Hello there:
If there is no heat or heat sometimes please try these solutions
Heating element Often a dryer heating element burns out, but doesn't trip the circuit breaker or blow a fuse. The heating element is simply a long coil of special wire. You can check it for continuity with an ohm meter. No continuity means the element is bad and you need to replace it--electric heating elements aren't repairable. Thermal fuse On many dryers, there's a thermal fuse mounted to the exhaust duct inside the back cover panel. The fuse--which is about an inch long--is usually embedded in black resin and mounted in a white plastic housing. If the fuse has blown, you need to replace it. (You can't re-set it.) Wiring A common problem is for the main wiring connection from the house, at the dryer, to burn and break its connection. Because the dryer can still tumble with partial power, the connection may be only partially defective. You may need to replace both the power cord to the dryer and the terminal block inside the dryer that the wire is attached to.

Maytag electric dryer when i set dial to desired setting i here a humming sound prior to pushing start button it has never done this before also the clothes is VERY hot when i take it out model ...

it sounds like a shorted heater element, this would also cause the heat to stay on at 110 volts which would make the clothes very hot since the element doesn't completely shut down. if it is a loud hum it could be a stuck motor switch but in this case the dryer usually won't start.
