If the number light isn't on anymore, there's something wrong with the physical connection between the PC and the router. About all you can do in this instance is to start "swapping things out".
Try these things in order. They go from easiest to more difficult.
1.) Move the ethernet cable to another "number" port on the Linksys router. Does the corresponding "number" light come on? If so, you had a bad ethernet transceiver on that port. (Note: this is *highly* unlikely, but it's worth a shot.
2.) If #1 doesn't work, try using another ethernet cable...that's the cable that runs from the computer to the "number" port on the router. If the "number" light on the router comes on after doing this, trash the old cable.
3.) If #2 doesn't work, Plug another PC into another "number port" on the router. It's easiest if you know somebody with a laptop. If the 2nd PC lights up the router's "number light", there *is* indeed a problem with your PC...namely the ethernet port. If the 2nd PC *doesn't* light up the number port on the router, your router is probably dead. Note: If you're up to it, you can take note of which cable goes where, completely disconnect the router, and take the router to the PC you want to hook it up to. If you do this, all you need to do is hook up the power supply and the PC's ethernet cable to the number port. You don't have to connect the non-number port.
If there's a problem with your computers ethernet port, just replace the card. I personally like the old Intel E100B's or 3Com 3C509's because you don't have to mess with drivers....just put it in a slot, and any Windows version 98 or or later will automatically load the drivers. If you buy a new card, you'll probably have to load drivers. Do the same thing if the ethernet jack is on-board. The system will work fine as long as only the new card is plugged into the network.
