best way to check if your ethernet is working (internet port) is by looping. get an ethernet cable, connect one end to either one of the local ports (1,2,3,4) at the back of the linksys router, the other end of that will then be connected to the Internet port or the WAN port. if the internet light goes on upfront, that will mean your internet port is working.
okay about making this work with your modem, it is still best if you start with ground zero on the router.
locate and press the reset button on the router for 20-25 seconds, then let it go, after so unplug the power, then plug it back in after 15 seconds.
once that is done follow these:
check your PC's IP.
XP
click start>run>CMD> then click "OK"
on the command prompt type in ipconfig then press "enter"
vista
click start(orb)>on start search type in CMD then press "enter"
on the command prompt type in ipconfig then press "enter"
if your IP address shows 192.168.1.xx (xx being a number from 2 to 253), you may close the window and proceed to the next step.
if your IP starts with 169.254.xx.xx please repeat resetting the device, then the power cycle.
okay so you got a good IP, follow these then.
1.open IE
2.on the address bar type
http://192.168.1.1 then hit go
3.it will as you for a username and a password, leave the UN blank and the PW is admin, if that did not work try putting admin on both username and password.
when a linksys window shows up, you will see tabs like:
Setup
Wireless
Security
Applications and Gaming
Administrator
etc
on the "Setup" tab, look for a subtab that says "Mac Address Clone" then:
1. enable the clone service
2. click on the "clone your PCs MAC"
3. click on "Save Settings"
once saved, we do a power cycle including the modem.
1.turn the modem and the router off
2.after about 10 seconds, turn the mdoem and wait for the light infront of it to be stable. (like the "online" light should be solid)
3.once it is solid, turn the router back on, then let it sit there for about 15 seconds or modem until the power light is solid
once both devices are on, go back to your Linksys setup page, click on the status tab and you should be able to see an IP address on the internet section, once you have it, you're now online.
