Need more info But off the top of my head it sounds like a clogged Catalytic converter that is restricting the exhaust causing back pressure to the engine cylinders and loss of power.

Thank you very much, this is very helpful,it is the problem, I loosed the exhaust and free the air and it really works. Now I will change the Catalytic converter

2.4L '95 Toyota Tacoma sputters out when trying to get going.

when did it last run good, last week, last year or nobody knows/
that is good one, odd for sure that. NO scan tools work 1995 ,
2.4L stick shift. M/T
well the engine has no idea at all what gear you are in.
so my guess is, yes engine is overloading, (reverse is better )
means engine power is super super weak.
because REV has a higher numerical RATIO gear. than 1st.
so seem have more power. in REV.
sputters up is not a norm car term, but can me 2 things
  • gross engine misfire.
  • or the clutch slips. (RPM Rises but MPH goes slower.?
the engine dies/ DEAD, 0 RPM? that be>>>>
MY BEST GUESS BLIND, IS ENGINE IS:
  • ENGINE IS FLOODING , SMELL FUEL? injector leaks.
  • SPARK IS BAD,
  • OR FUEL FLOW LOSS. LEAN BURN STALLS.
  • Bad fuel, (old fuel was there before or now?).
there are lots of actual caused (parts bad)
spark parts all are old aND NO GOOD NOW. PLUGS/WIRES HV,CAP ROTOR HAS DISTRIBUTOR? YES IT IS.
BAD FUEL OR LOW FUEL PRESSURE OR CLOGGED FUEL OR AIR FILTERS.
all above assumes actual engine is ok, compression tests pass.
that is all I can figure out , not seen or driven me.
I can no see RPM and MPH dials or hear the engine sputter.

Engine sputters at low rpm, overheats at high rpm. towing a camper

if your towing it will heat up faster,, watch the rpm's ,, if you need to downshift during uphill climbs do so,, keep the RPM's a little higher than normal, as far as the sputtering,, that could also be due to the towing and extra weight on the motor,, it could be that some of the components are weak, and towing just makes you notice them more, check the cap for build-up on the contact points, and also, the rotor , depending on the miles already on your plugs they too could be at the end of their life cycle, with the over heating, make sure you have a good mix of antifreeze and water in the radiator, and make sure the fan is functioning properly

Is lionel 40 watt transformer from toy train enough power to run a dual motor larger train engine it just lites up and sputters

It would depend on what engine you're trying to run. The 40 watt transformer's circuit breaker will trip off if you put too large of an electrical load on it. If the engine light stays on while it sputters, the track or the engine's motor and electrical pick-ups may need cleaning. Older engines that haven't been run for a while can get stiff. Your engine may need some lubrication.

Tapping noise at 3000 rpm on 4.0 litre 1996 ford explorer.Valves are quiet at idle and up to 3000 rpm

have the oil pressure checked. i believe the specification is 40-60 psi at 2000 rpm. sticking valves and lifters can cause valve train noise. weak vavle springs can also be the problem. try running an engine cleaner such as gunk motor flush at your next oil change. follow directions specifically. obtain a product designed to aid in cleaning deposits on valves.

Fuel pressure intermittently drops causing sputter and die.

check for 12v constant at your fuel pump if you are not getting that replace your relay.
if you are getting 12 volts at your fuel pump the fuel pump is possible to run tuel it gets warm then shut down to a lower rpm I would then replace the fuel pump
