I try and print something from both Mac and PCs to my Fuji Xerox cp305d. All that occurs is that it beeps 3 or 4 times, and comes up with a paper size error. The computers are sending A4 size and the printer is loaded with A4 paper. If I open the tray, then close it again and push okay, it prints happily, even though I have changed nothing.

You should configure TRAY 1 as Legal only.
and Tray 2 as plain letter.
Specially when you specify from what tray/paper type to print.
This can be easily configured from the Printer Properties within the Printers and Faxes section of the Control Panel.
Good luck!
SOURCE: Changing Paper Size
If the blue guide in the back of the tray (called the length plate adjuster) is broken or dislodged, the machine may not recognize what size paper is installed. When the guide is moved, three arms on the right side of the paper tray change configuration. Those arms push against sensors in the machine to tell the printer what size paper is in the tray. You can temporarily resolve this by taping the guide in the A4 position, however you should consider replacing the tray or replacing the guide soon to avoid tape getting into the printer.
Hope this helps!

Try two things:
Fan the paper before placing in the tray.
Raise the humidity in the room to at least 40% to avoid electrostatic sticking of the paper. Store paper in 40% humidity area.
