Dim lighting.... my mom gave me this tv after winning if from work (a smoke filled casino/bar) when they were re-modeling. i think it is really dirty and thats what is making it so dark and dim. also it has a textured screen. and ideas on how to clean it or howto take it apart?

Check if the sensor of the ambient light in the room is dirty (bottom of TV). If so, the TV thinks its playing in a dark room and so sets the screen to dim.
If that doesn't improve things, turn a flashlight on the sensor to fool it into thinking its a brighter room.
Okay check the self diagnosis feature, Hold the input and menu buttons in at the same time on the set, hold for 5 seconds see if the set blinks 1-2 blinks pauses then blinks 1-4 blinks. If so let me know the number of blinks. If not check the following items in the power supply for being open or shorted.
R9A02 R9A22 R9A23
Check Q9A51 Q9A22 also its diodes D9A31 and D9A32
Also check the 3 fues F9Doo, F9A01 and F9A06
Also check the solder on T9A20 and the flyback . Let me know what you find.
