Camera was dropped while on with lens cylinder in the 'out' position. Now the camera will turn on as merely report the text 'lens eror' in the viewfinder. Any chance a mechanical adjustment inside the camera would be worth the effort/expense? Not my camera, but I dropped it....

Watch the lens when you turn it on. Does it come out ok, or does it look like it's struggling? Try to 'help' it out as it tries to come out.

PS if you just want to get the photos off, try removing the memory card and taking it to another camera that uses the same card, or take it to a photo processing place and ask them to copy off the photos. (They will probably charge you a small fee for this)

Lense error- can hear lense trying to open, but lense does not come out of the camera body. This is weird because the camera was not dropped/hit/damaged. I used the camera to take night images of a rising...

The camera seems to have some lens problem.
Now, that said, let's try.
If you can get to the menu, reset all to default.
If that does not work, then the camera will need the lens to be repaired.
I would suggest you call Nikon.
go to nikon.com find the toll free number under support. They will tell you what to do. This camera may still be under warranty.

My EX-S5 says lense error

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Broken Lense

try these:-
  • connect it to pc and on it
  • vaccum the barrel of lens
  • changing mem. card and batt. for 2min.
  • shake it.
  • on and off in different positions
  • hit the part near lens softly with palm (trust me this made mine work)

Lens error

ok,i had this problem & couldnt find solution anywhere,so i took the back off the camera to reveal the lense unit. Now there is 2 screws in the middle of the back of the lense you need to remove together with ribbon cable.Underneath this is a small square rubber seal which was not seated properly. All i done was to seat it back in the right place, put all back together & hey presto, turned camera on & all was good.
This might not be the same problem you all have but it worked for me.
Good luck !!!

The camra will not turn off and the lense wont close

I encountered the same problem, just last night. If it is the same, the only way I could get it to turn off was by taking the batteries out and the lens still would not retract. After re-installing the batteries several times with the same result, it would not turn off, I did this: I re-installed the batteries and powered up the camera, I applied a little force/pressure to the lens and it went back in. After that the camera seems to be working fine. I hope this helps, Mike
