Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Camera was dropped while on with lens cylinder in the 'out' position. Now the camera will turn on as merely report the text 'lens eror' in the viewfinder. Any chance a mechanical adjustment inside the camera would be worth the effort/expense? Not my camera, but I dropped it....
Lens problem also. Different error code. Lens error M425-12. The camera fell and the lens will not retract. I have tried helping it but it will not move.
my lens won't go back in and it shows lens error
I drop my camera and my is out and it says lens error:m425-12 (7f80)
and i do not know how to fix it!!!
please help me!!!
