I just added hdtv and when I'm watching regular stations and even some HD stations it blacks out each side of the screen and puts the show in just the middle of the screen. Every setting I put it on it will still do that. Just a few stations will take up the whole screen. If i hook up regular cable its fine and the show will take up the whole screen. How do i fix it so the show will take up the whole screen when i have it connected to the box?
If the station is not transmitting 16:9 you will have bars on the sides and sometimes top/bottom. The TV shows you the size that is being transmitted unless you change the settings to zoom or stretch which distorts the image to fill the screen which defeats the purpose of HDTV. The best alternative is to use 2 inputs. 1 for SDTV (s-video) and one for HDTV (component) and switch between them depending on what you are watching.

When you attach your Play Station 3 to an HD TV through an HDMI port,
the Play Station 3 will ask you if you wish to switch to HD Mode.
However,
if you decide to move it to another TV that is not HD compatible, you
will get no picture because the Play Station 3 is “stuck” in HD (HDMI)
mode.
Follow these steps to resolve your problem:
1. Turn
off the PS3 so it only shows a red light. You can hold the power button
on the front until it goes into standby. To be sure, flick the power
switch on the back of the Play Station 3 off and then back on.
2.
Make sure your Play Station 3 is connected to your regular TV (not
HDTV) with the standard video cables.
3. Press and hold the power
button until the screen "flickers" and then immediately release. This
should reset the video settings.
4. Wait a few seconds, and the
Play Station 3 (PS3) logo should appear.
If this does not resolve
the problem, follow these steps:
1. Turn off the PS3 so it only
shows a red light. You can hold the power button on the front until it
goes into standby. To be sure, flick the power switch on the back of the

2. Make sure your Play
Station 3 is connected to your regular TV (not HDTV) with the standard
video cables.
3. Press and hold the power button on the front
until the Play Station 3 beeps and then turns off again. This should
reset the video for you and you can turn it back on after this.
That’s
it! You can play your Play Station 3 again!
Are these lines on both side of the screen or what location are they in? They can be caused by watching 4:3 television with the black bars on both sides. Watching 16:9 full screen HD wont cause issues with that. If only on the sides there is not much you can do except put a pure white screen on the TV and leave that on for at least 6 hours. This will age the panel a little but in theroy wil even the pixel burn you have to make the lines less noticable. Please take a few moments to rate my answer. Thank you

RCA have choices for different methods of CC in user CC menu. Labelled T1, T2, etc. . Different selections are for different types of close caption. Tune to a signal (on your other TV) that has closed caption working.
Tune your RCA to the same signal. Change the T1,T2, etc settings until the closed caption for your signal appears.
If this doesn't work, try connecting analog video or VHF channel 3 (or other specified channel) to the TV. check CC. When TV stations, sat channels, sat receivers, cable boxes etc, convert analog video signals to HD, problems can result. Some equipment causes RCA TVs to do unexpected things with sound and closed caption.
If you use RF or video output, old analog video may look better on CH3 or video than on HD input and the CC will work more consistently. Watch HD signals on HD input, Analog signals on Video in or through the TV tuner . Many HD channels and programs are converted analog video and look poor on TV HD inputs.
I just got the same exact one, when it searches automatically the first time it doesn't look for digital channels. go to Menu>manual channel search>cable. it will look for all possible signals and will take forever probably. the free digital channels will take several seconds to switch channel to channel, but they're there! They will show up on your screen as "DC 91-2" or similar. you can switch back to regular cable channels with the input button, you just cycle through all the inputs. hope that helps.
