Red light on for High Freezer Temperature Warning
or freezer not cooling, but fridge is and a lot of noise from compressor.
Also, fridge drain hole blocked, water in bottom of fridge.

This is a common fault in Hotpoint Fridge Freezers and can also happen if the door has been left open or has been a power cut.

1. Turn off fridge freezer, or at least turn down the freezer temp to minimum, though not ideal.
2. Open freezer door and remove all drawers.
3. Remove the back panel on the inside of the freezer. This is held in place with 4 screws, which might be 6mm hex head or star allen head. Pull the panel out.
4. Behind where the panel was, there is a cooling element for cooling, pipes, and below this a temperature sensor. If the fridge freezer is not switched off, then fold together a few layers of tinfoil and wrap around the sensor.
5. Use a hairdryer to slowly melt the ice. Melt it around areas where it appears to be hanging on, such as the corners of the cooling element or bolts, as well as any thin sections below the main block of ice around the cooling element, which will be supporting the main block. Use a plastic ice scraper to remove ice but not near pipes or sensor.
Warning: Be careful using electrics around water & melting ice & drips.
6. Below the cooling element, there is a drip channel & drain hole. If this hole is full of ice, pour a small amound of warm water down, leave for 10 seconds and pour a bit more until clear.
In the fridge, clear the drain hole in the same way.
Warning: Do not pour a lot of water down, as this water drains onto a tray above the hot compressor at the rear of the fridge freezer to be evaporated by the heat of the compressor and the tray will only hold a small amount.
7. When all ice is removed, dry all moisture. Put the shelves back. Close door. Turn on fridge freezer. Turn up the freezer temperature to your normal setting. Turn on fast freeze if available. After 1 hour, check with a thermometer. It should be cold enough after 1 or 2 hours.

SOURCE: Working fridge, warm freezer.

The fresh food compartment is cooled by air being blown from the freezer compartment into the fresh food compartment.

There is a panel, or door if you will, that separates the freezer and fresh food compartments. The freezer temp control determines how much cold air is allowed to escape into the fresh food compartment by opening or closing this panel.

In your case, the door must be stuck all the way open, allowing all the cold air to be diverted into the fresh food compartment. The compressor cycle is controlled by the thermostat in the fresh food compartment and thus 'short cycles' because the fresh food compartment acheives normal temperature while the freezer is relativel warm.

If the panel is restricted from moving (stuck in the extreme open position, for example), the fresh food compartment will get VERY cold while the freezer will be warm.

Try thoroughly defrosting the refrigerator. Possibly an accumulation of ice is preventing the panel from moving and/or is diverting all the cold air from the freezer into the fresh food compartment. It's a free fix and may solve your problem altogether.

If that doesn't help, or helps only temporarily, you may have a problem with panel/door/flap itself or the linkage that connects it to the control mechanism. Unless you're skilled in appliance repair, checking and repairing these components will require the help of a service technician

Hope this was helpful. Good Luck.

SOURCE: fridge side cold freezer not. compressor seems to be short cycleing

if theres a clicking noise behind the unit, then the ptc overload relay is weak and dropping in and out which will short cycle the compressor, also a compressor thats going bad will draw excessive current and make the ptc drop in and out check start and run currents to determine this, also, but rare it could be the cold temp control

Amana upright frost free freezer, early 1970's vintage

For the love of God get rid of this death trap.

It could be that it was meant to have a neutral earth, ie the neutral is connected to earth at the substation and house inlet and somehow the live and neutral has become reversed at the plug.

You have seen the case becomes live, this may be happening due to leakage current or a short as you say.

Either way the earth was there for a reason, to stop the case from becoming dangerous and you have removed that protection.

Neither the heater element or motor windings should have continuity to the case, I'd disconnect and check these out individually to isolate the problem and repair it, then put the earth connection back before using the freezer.

Why does my upright freezer runs then kicks off, runs then kicks off?

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand your Frigidaire freezer runs for a short time and then kicks off. Then it turns on with a click and repeats its cycle. This is how your freezer functions. When it needs to cool, the compressor will kick on and cool until the temperature is reached. Then it will kick off until it needs to cool again. It's possibly due to the hot and humid summer that it is cycling on and of more. I hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

If the defrost cycle was stuck on then the compressor would not be humming trying to start. You may have a shorted compressor. Especially if its a frigidaire they are known to have the worst compressors. You can use a meter to check your compressor windings. You can check for a short by scratching the paint off the compressor and checking from each terminal to the bare metal on the compressor. If you have continuity then its shorted. Also check continuity from each pair of pins on the compressor. Good Luck _MJ_

Compressor Stopping

compressor is running overloaded possible problems bad relay/overload /capacitor dirty or clogged condensers if the unit uses a condenser fan suspect a bad fan. and defective thermostats are notorious for short cycling. id check the coils first and if dirty clean up maybe that can be the major problem.

Kenmore chest freezer.

Most likely a bad compressor. You could try a new relay on it first.
