Compressor Stopping When I turn my Frigidaire chest freezer on, the compressor will run for about 5-10 seconds, then stop. Freezer, in turn, can't cool. Please help?

if have an amp probe [multi-meter] when turns on check amp draw on motor ----motor failure ---thermostat failure --no freon

Is the compressor running? if it is running, but there is no cooling, it is time to buy a new freezer.
If the compressor is NOT running, I would suspect the compressor start relay.
How did you defrost it?

Hello Cory Mitchell - If your freezer is not cooling, it could have a floating restriction in the lines or something more complicated like an issue with the seal system that only a professional can repair. This can conclude the compressor not working correctly, the evaporator fan not turning, or even coolant in the lines at incorrect levels to properly cool. If the compressor was running, humming or even a little warm then that was typically normal. Also try checking and see if the door seal is bad; place a dollar bill between the body of the freezer and the door. Now close the door. The dollar bill should stay in place and pull out with a small amount of resistance. If the dollar bill falls out when placed between the gasket and cabinet double check to see if the door is being blocked by anything stopping it from closing. If it proves to be ineffective, connect with a professional to accurately pinpoint any potentially more serious issues.

Check condensor not clogged up, fan working etc. If all ok, try new capacitor and relay. If all else fails, replace freezer (compressor replacement is costly)

Is the compressor continually running? If so then there could be a leak in the system or the compressor is damaged. If it's running then stopping, the cold control (thermostat) could be damaged.

the thermostat may not be turning on the compressor.
Do you hear a buzz and or clicking every few minutes when plugged in? If so the compressor is trying to start indicating a problem with the compressor. you could check the windings for continuity or a short and then try a 3-in-1 start kit.

Either the refrigerant has leaked out or the compressor isn't pumping properly. If you can put your ear up to the unit and it hums that is the compressor running.
No practical repair possible unless the unit is under 5 years of age in which case you are entitled to factory warranty service.

This sounds like a bad overload relay or locked up compressor. If you are very technical, you can do some troubleshooting by checking to see if the compressor pulls "locked rotor" amps when it tries to start. This information should be on the unit nameplate and will be listed under "LRA". This requires special testing equipment (an amprobe). Also check for any bad connections at the plug and the terminals where the cord terminates inside the electrical compartment on the freezer.

Something else to try is to plug the freezer into a different electrical outlet and see if the same problem occurs.

If the freezer is over 15 years old and the compressor is bad, it will not be worth the cost of repairs.

look around the back of the freeze and at the bottom you will see a small black compressor .Put your hand on it and if it is running you will feel it vibrating. If it vibrating but running very hot them it means you have no gas in the system so the freezer won't freeze. If the compressor is cold and not running then it could be eaither the relay on the compressor or the board on the front either way you will need to get an engineer in
